Montgomery, L. M.: Anne of the Island. v1. 20 Feb 2026

Chronologically the third of the “Anne” books. Eighteen-year-old Anne Shirley leaves Green Gables and her work as a teacher in Avonlea to pursue her original dream (which she gave up in Anne of Green Gables) of taking further education at Redmond College in Nova Scotia. Some of her classmates are going with her, including her childhood enemy turned friend Gilbert Blythe, while others stay in Avonlea to work, get married, and start families. Over the next four years, she earns her B.A., shares a cozy house called Patty’s Place with friends, experiences romance, and ultimately realizes her love for Gilbert. The story focuses on the female relationships and emotional growth of the characters.

================
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was a prolific Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. The title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. Although her work is frequently categorized as "juvenile fiction," adults continue to be devoted readers. Almost all of her works are still published today.
