For me, waterproofing is a very nice improvement. It is all that was missing from the first Clara (well, buttons would be great). Extra storage is nice too. I actually managed to fill most of the 8GB on my Clara. Granted, it was through gross mismanagement on my part, but still.

Mainly, I think updating the charger to USB-C and the next generation screen were what caused Kobo to put out the refreshed Clara. They llikely don't want to be where the Oasis finds itself right now.

That's true. Ereaders have gotten to where phones are. There's just not a lot of stuff left to do. One cheap and easy improvement is using slightly faster processors. That is one feature of the current Kindle Paperwhite that I am jealous of. For an eink device, navigation is very zippy.
