word count
I don't suppose there is a way to count the words in the epub? I know I could use the plug-in, I just don't know how accurate it is.
Thanks |

@Tanjamuse - If you want a second opinion, Sigil gives word counts of the HTML files in Tools->Reports (see screen shot). They are usually close to the counts one gets from Word 2007 for the same text, the Count Pages word counts are usually a higher. For the same 'book' I get the following
Count Pages - 92662, Sigil - 90372, Word - 90908 Publisher says - 91,000 BR |

I think I'll make another column for my own word count I had hoped that it would be possible to add it in "edit books", but if Sigil's close to being accurate, then I'll start there
Thanks BR |

@Tanjamuse - the counting of words is a much vexed subject. I wouldn't say Sigil's word counts are more accurate than the Count Pages PI, merely different. Perhaps Sigil/Word count 'post-haste' as one word, whilst Count pages counts it as two, who's to say which is correct...

I see it as a matter of accuracy versus practicality. Personally, I use word count and page count as an indicator of how long I'll take to read that book. So as long as the counting algorithm stays within a, say, 5% error margin over the 'real' count (however you determine that count), it doesn't really matter whether it's exact or not. I just need the count to stay consistent across books.
So for my use case, the plugin is about perfect. It even lets me define the number of characters per 'page', so I could have the same page counts I get in my reader (within acceptable error margin). Sure, I would hesitate to use the plugin as a number generator in a scientific paper, but as I'm not writing any of those using the plugin has no downside whatsoever (that I could determine). N. |
