Duokan 2013 ( the new version of Duokan Lite, Duokan 2012) is an alternative OS for Kindle3, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch and Paperwhite which supports ePub,mobi, Pdf and txt format (and zip and rar formats for pictures)

Duokan Lite (previous version of Duokan 2013) has RTL support : Lite2011-12-02.C3177.rtm [only for K3]


Updating an already installed Duokan Lite to the new version:

• You can update with WiFi
  0. Load Duokan from the boot screen
  1. connect WiFi
  2. (if it doesn't prompt for the update) System Settings >> check update.
• Alternatively, copy DK_System folder over the existing one approving when it asks for replacing files and merging folders. Then restart Kindle
• Third way: (you may want to backup your /res/ScreenSaver ,/res/dict, config.ini, etc to save your preferences)
  Delete DK_System folder and copy the new one. And restart Kindle, choose Duokan Lite (Q) on boot screen. Then replace your saved data if any.

  • for the versions before 2012:
    There are three ways, to use them just unzip them to your launchpad folder and restart the launchpad with [Shift Shift Space]
    • duokan-ini.zip this one is sufficient to read pdf files and also easy to use: [^D S] to switch to Duokan and [^ D X] to switch back to Kindle.
      This method useful if you want to use Duokan to read pdf files. this method fails in some other cases. (USB connection, ePub and txt reading)
    • doukanloader3.zip loads Duokan Lite completely and returns to KindleOS instantly: [^D E] to start duokan lite. to return to Kindle OS, we need two steps: firstly [alt+sym>"switch to Kindle"] and then [^D X ] (needs stopdkl.sh from duokan-ini.zip) (USB connection fails also for this case)
    • DuokanLoader2.This script loads Duokan completely with [^D F]. Turning back to Kindle currently available through the option: Settings>Switch to Kindle. (and takes longer time)

To change the dual boot option to boot KindleOS as default OS after restart:

To use it with Duokan (ie this one) (to have Duokan and Duokan Lite at the same time)[only for K3]

Firstly install Duokan
Then install Duokan lite (copy Dk_System from Duokan Lite zip (and confirm all overwriting, merging options)
Restart Kindle
(If this does not work; also copy the appropriate update file from Duokan Lite zip then update using menu>settings>menu>Update your Kindle)
On the boot screen you will see three options for these three OSs like this:

Later on, when you want to update Duokan Lite for the following releases, only copy DK_System over existing one, then restart and choose Lite on boot screen

This week update notes:
1- Strategies to modify the install and uninstall, the uninstall brick solve the problem, but do not reverse after the upgrade (such as from the 0917 version to 0909 version).
2- Cover the 0917 version upgrade, the upgrade process interface is somewhat unusual, black and white display after a successful upgrade, press any key to black and white disappeared back to normal.
3- If the course of the next book wifi automatically disconnected, the system will automatically connect, so when we do not have wifi, manually shut down the wifi, saving power.

Duokan Dev Team suspended their project: Duokan; and started to develop a new OS called Duokan Lite to increase efficiency, ..etc

I picked up a latest generation Kindle DX on ebay a couple of days ago. Waiting for it to be delivered. I have a lot of books in epub and pdf books that I used to view on my Sony e-reader.

What I'm trying to figure out now is what software to run to view epubs and get better PDF functionality. Looks like Duokan is the answer to my search.

However, I'm still trying to understand what I'm looking at here. What is the difference between Duokan and Duokan lite? Is Duokan Lite just the latest version of Duokan? Lite is the recommended version then? Will it work on my Kindle DX?

Does anybody have some good screenshots of technical PDF documents and how they look on Duokan?

unfortunately you can't use Duokan lite (the latest version). It is only for kindle 3 now.

PDFs look slightly worse than the original kindle firmware. But it has enhanced abilities like, reading TOCs, half-page or quarter-page views, full-screen mode, adjusting the level of black, manual zoom etc.

Gave it a spin last night - I must say that I didn't have very high expectations, but Duokan Lite is surprisingly rather damn good. It's a lot faster in regards to UI actions, page turns are near instant and it has some basic options that the vanilla firmware is missing (i.e date config, easy font addition and switching).

Some of the UI is too cramped for the translated strings, other areas have a few grammatical errors or arnt translated at all. The EPUB/reader seems to reformat things a bit too much, but it's largely usable. The progress bar being in the lowest visible pixels is somewhat of a strange choice.

I'd love to play around with some of the code - but it seems to be a commercial venture and I'm not seeing a public repo (which is odd, I assume there's at least some of the kindle gpl infested stuff in there - but perhaps not). But for now they seem to be working quickly and in the right direction.

In all - I'll be keeping a close eye on it

Found the problem. I was skipping the update step.

Most books don't appear in Duokan. Just some pdf and txt. Why?

You can use labels to create collections and choose to sort books with respect to them by SORT>Labels ( press home>"X")

to add a label to a book click right button of the five-way on a book , then press "T" twice.
You can add several labels and have this book on this "collections" at the same time.
