HTC Universal early in-depth review

04:36 AM by Alexander Turcic in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

Since the MDA pro aka HTC Universal is already on sale in Germany, it doesn't surprise us that one of the first in-depth reviews comes from a German news site. Even if you don't understand Deutsch, you should check them out for all the nice photo shots. Overall the reviewer seems pretty excited about the clamshell form factor and the 640 x 480 65K color display. A more extensive battery test should follow.

Crossing the Digital Divide: Mobile phones for learning

10:54 AM by Brian in Miscellaneous | Lounge

As mobile phones become the primary communication and computing devices in developing countries, a new project called MobiLed - Mobile phones in informal and formal learning in developing countries aims to use handhelds to help educate the masses.

Smartphones, multimedia phones, and internet tablets like the upcoming Nokia 770 will be used for project-based learning, problem solving, and inquiry learning using resources like Wikipedia and MediaWiki.

According to Teemu Leinonen from FLOSSE Posse, Nicholas Negroponte's Hundred Dollar Laptop project for developing countries isn't the answer for the Digital Divide.

For more information about how mobile phones are helping people in developing countries, see this article from The Economist, and this article from the Center to Bridge the Digital Divide.

New podcasts coming... 247 Chat Show

07:27 AM by Bob Russell in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

From Shaun and PDA247, "Lots of you have emailed regarding the first test Podcast and asking when the first one will be published. The answer is soon... The site for them is almost done, the software to make them is in place and I have an idea of the format. Expect interviews, audio reviews, humour and a run time of about 40 minutes. This will not be a normal run of the mill Podcast!"

I wonder - could this be the start of the first mobile tech variety podcast?!

Update: You can find all you need to know here, including the rdf feed, and the xml feed. Be sure to let Shaun know what you think! Thks Shaun.

Knock Knock by Seth Godin for download

07:04 PM by Colin Dunstan in E-Book General | News

Marketing guru Seth Godin released his e-book Knock Knock under the Creative Common license. It's an entertaining read covering the basics of building a successful Web site. Better even, there's already a sequel from Basil Drolias that you can download as well.

Live TV on the Nokia 770

06:05 PM by Colin Dunstan in Archive | Handhelds and Smartphones

And here is another reason (do you really need any more?) why you should go to your next local gadget dealer and buy the Nokia 770 (once it gets out). With wlanTV, which is currently developed on the Maemo platform, you can watch Live TV everywhere in your wlan by using a special daemon which controls your dvb-card. It's only not clear to me whether you need another computer with the DVB card inserted, or whether you can use the Nokia as standalone to watch TV (and insert the card in USB).
