04:58 PM by mikecook in E-Book General | News

A few hours back Penguin.co.uk put up a page with six Penguin titles in the ePub format :-D

These are just teasers but it is cool to see they are preparing to go live themselves!

Here is the link;

Free E-Book: Strange Attractors by Jeffrey A. Carver

04:22 PM by starrigger in E-Book General | Deals and Resources (No...

In case you missed the announcement on the Neptune Crossing thread, I've just added Strange Attractors to my downloads page. It's available right now in the following formats: html, Mobipocket, RTF, PDF (2 versions), and LIT. LRF, eReader, and epub are expected shortly.

I couldn't have done it without the generous help of folks on this board.

If you're just joining us on this topic, I'm releasing free downloads of all three volumes of The Chaos Chronicles to date, in anticipation of the late-October publication of Sunborn as a Tor hardcover.

I'll have more news soon on the ebook status of Sunborn. And if I can find enough hours in the day, I also hope to release a podcast audiobook!

Best--Jeff

Web Browsing from the Ebw-1150 - BETA Testers needed

02:47 PM by Nate the great in More E-Book Readers | Fictionwise eBookwise

The latest version of the 1150 browsing hack is ready for beta testers. This version is much more stable, and also has several new features including the ability to download IMP ebooks.

You can find the link to download the hack at the end of this post, but before you do I want to provide instructions on how to set it up.

1. Before doing anything else, turn on your 1150 and open Settings. Go to the Phone Connection page.
2. At the bottom of the page, click "Use HTTP proxy". In the input area directly below type in 127.0.0.1.
3. Next, click "Use proxy for USB". In the input area directly below type in 9090.

Once you've done the above, all you need to do is follow the link to the current thread on this topic.

Sony Reader conquers Europe - Germany is next

04:51 PM by doctorow in E-Book General | News

It's not a secret that Sony Germany has been eyeing the Sony Reader for their local market, but now we got some hard facts, thanks to the Spiegel magazine who talked to Sony at the Ifa exhibit in Berlin:

Auf der Ifa in Berlin zeigte Sony den Reader erstmals in Deutschland und versprach, das Gerät noch in diesem Jahr auch hierzulande einzuführen.

So still in this year we should be expecting to see the Sony Reader in German stores. Furthermore:

Sony is planning something similar to Sony Connect for Germany, and they are promising to tell us more about their plans at the Frankfurt Bookfair in October.

Penn State Sony Reader Pilot Project

10:52 AM by yekim54 in E-Book General | News

This fall, Penn State University Libraries and the English Department begin a year-long pilot project with student groups using the Sony Reader Digital Book, a portable electronic reading device that can hold books, audio files, and other downloaded materials. Sony donated 100 of the devices to the Libraries for the project that will test the utility of e-books in a higher education environment. The study will explore the potential of the Sony Readers in a variety of settings, including the Libraries’ leisure reading program, undergraduate and graduate classrooms, academic research projects, and as a service for people with disabilities.

iRex Moving Support in House

02:25 PM by Adam B. in More E-Book Readers | iRex

Via i-to-i blog.

iRex is moving their support to their main office. Previously, their support was by a 3rd party company in Germany, who handled support for many companies. It appears that they're moving it in house to a specific support group that is much more familiar with the iLiad and it's internal workings. This should reduce "canned" responses and increase the overall quality of their support offering.

They have, however, discontinued their phone support. Hopefully, even this this development, the new support team will be more responsive, and be better equipped to handle support requests.
