Palm Treo 800p to be out in March?

Rumors swirl about an upcoming Palm Treo 800p supposed to hit the markets on March 15th. Features include juicy 128MB of RAM, a "Wifi option" (not sure if that could mean integrated WiFi), SD card support, Bluetooth 2, and EVDO. PalmAddicts has the details!

If this is real, the wifi option has surely got to mean an sd wifi card. Which is a little bit of a bummer because unless there are two card slots, it means card swapping and carrying an extra card around unless you use a flip case.

I think the 800p name makes a lot more sense, especially if there are these spec improvements over the 700w. That original stuff about Julius Caesar makes me all the more skeptical that it's a prank, but it could have a meaning to the original poster that is logical. Who knows?!

The idea of a click key mini keyboard with a hires+ screen is very intriguing. As well as maybe thinner and no external antenna. This could be another spectacular form factor if true and the keyboard is actually usable and the d-pad is still workable.

The d-pad is slightly inconvenient on my 650 because it's so tiny, but I do have one of those clear "skin" cases on it. That case is also the reason I don't have a place for an extra sd card. Hmm wonder if I could just a wifi sd card underneath the skin in the back, or if it would fall out? But I hope future Treos are at least as usable in the d-pad which is the main point of contact to the device.

So anyway, if this is true, and especially if it comes to Sprint this year with a $15 unltd data plan, it's one of those things that almost seems too good to be true. The 3megapixel camera also seems like a little forward-reaching for Palm. But we'll see if it's for real, and if they can really carry this off as effectively as they did the recent very well-done 650 and T|X devices.

As much as I am skeptical about the specs in the rumors, I'm hoping they can pull it off! For device lovers, we're over the PalmOS lull in devices and good stuff has been coming out again. It may be on Garnet, but that's still getting the job done for now. But on the Windows Mobile side, I see this as their lull period. Win Mobile still very young so compatibility and bugs linger. And VGA is slow to be adopted by device makers, so there's not a lot of high-end choice on the PPC side. It may be quite a while before we see a nice stable and wide-ranging collection of VGA PPC models on the market. Device designers for PPC, especially smartphone designers, seem stuck in 240x320 mode. I know it's workable, and at least it's much better than the old 160x160 Palm lo-res. But for my taste, it is just plain ugly and old-fasioned when compared to hires+, or even just plain ole hires (320x320).

So in my mind, that makes this an even more awesome window of opportunity for Palm if they really do pull off a successful hires+ PalmOS Treo 800p close to the rumored specs we're hearing. But like I said, it may just have a bit more goodies in the rumors than we can really expect on the market.

BTW, Please let's not turn this thread into another PalmOS vs PPC flame war. I just tried to make the comments about PPC because they seem quite relevant to put perspective on the possible 800p release relative to the current market situation. I'm not out to say PPC is wonderful or PPC is bad. This is not what this thread is for. But if you want to jump off of that sort of topic (in a polite and friendly discussion), feel free to start another thread!

To me, it sounds like some PalmOS fans are envious of the 700w's success and are putting out a rumour just to rain on Palm's parade. 3.2 megapixel camera... yeah right! And the Shakespeare reference is hilarious. One can find all sorts of hidden meanings if one looks hard enough.
