Rumors of a new Treo in December

It's always fun to keep up on rumors of new devices, but it's good to take the earliest ones with a grain of salt. Here's the rumor being reported by Engadget based on a post at TreoCentral.

"It reads more like a Treo fanboy wishlist than a completely convincing spec sheet, but someone posted up some details about what is supposedly going to be Palm’s next Treo (and we won’t even get into the completely dubious pic of a 'Treo 700' that popped up on HowardForums the other day). It all sounds a little dubious, but this dude claims that the next Treo will have the same form factor as the Treo 650 but run on Palm OS Cobalt 6.1 (okay…..) and have Bluetooth 1.2, WiFi, 64MB of RAM, and EV-DO. Oh, and supposedly this new Treo should be out sometime around December or possibly early next year."

The same form factor makes sense because it's very popular, and Ed Colligan of Palm has made it clear in the past that it doesn't make much sense to go to completely different designs when you can build on successful products instead. EV-DO or any high speed connectivity is a big improvement if the usage fees are not too steep. And 64MB of RAM sure beats the 22MB I have on my Treo 650.

I'm suspicious about the WiFi because carriers want your cash for themselves every time you connect to the internet. But it's fun to dream.

The claim that this device runs Cobalt 6.1 makes me very suspicious that this rumor has any truth. After all, PalmSource announced a couple of days ago that Cobalt was to be dropped, so why would PalmOne now decide to release a new device with a dead OS?

I agree with Alex. The OS 6.1 spec should be taken with a bucket of salt. Aside from PalmSource having abandoned development, Palm wouldn't want to take any risks with an all-new OS on their flagship product. WiFi is also unlikely, the carriers wouldn't have it. Remember, some of them initially disabled Bluetooth on the Treo650, and there are still no official drivers for the WiFi SD card. EV-DO makes sense, though, and would be huge improvement. Maybe also a better screen for outdoor viewing? It'd be nice if it had 256Mb (or more) of flash memory.
