Head butting fun with other fellow authors/publishers

Okay, I'm new to this game, only been helping my lovely wife get her book(s) out to the world for a couple of months and I've only been here on the forums for a few days, but tell me I'm wrong in that I can see that I'll be butting-heads with a few other authors/publishers in the near future, even if I'm not looking for a fight.

What is it about some people that they seem so full of insecurity, bile and bitterness that they have to stomp their ground, puff their chest and snarl when they put down their opinon; staking an immediate claim of superiority on all fronts even when no one was making such stakeouts.

Really people... we're all here for a common thing, to share our works with the world and to hopefully make a living off it. People can read more than just one book, so it's not like another publisher/author is going to steal that sale.

Its very easy to stomp and snarl anonymously behind a computer screen.

Its also easy to mis-understand something written on a screen, rather than spoken face to face........there is no inflection, there is no chance to look at the other persons face and see how something is verbalized.

And..........some people are just obnoxious.

You had me worried there for a couple of sentences desertgrandma, then you bought it home

What I am finding is that there's a lot of people who troll these waters looking for things to feed on. My problem is that I like wonder what's making them so hungry. Perhaps I despair at the dwindling sense of civility between people.

You are not the only one to, occasionally, despair - likely some folk deliberately stoke the fires.

Definitely. I see it all the time, in person. All ages, all races, all social strata.

A simple "excuse me"

A simple "thank you"

covering your mouth when you sneeze/cough

letting the other person go first at a stop sign

Courtesy has to be taught as a child.......over and over and over again, until its ingrained.

When I do see little ones go out of their way to do these things, I always stop and compliment them.

It just doesn't happen that often....

As an anxiety-disorder encumbered person, I have to say that the cough/sneeze thing really makes my heart rate skyrocket - particularly in a queue where you cannot escape. It's hard enough sorting out the imaginary pains/feelings from the real ones without being misted from behind by the unknown assailant.

Don't worry MrPLD, you're just experiencing the joy that is a community of independent authors with fragile egos, constantly seeking validation and green-eyed with jealousy any time they read a bit of prose that just might be better than their stuff

This of course holds true for every creative art form. You should get in the middle of a bunch of wannabee actors sometime, it makes writers all look like the souls of decorum.

You are new around here, aren't you?

Well, why should MR be any different from the rest of the web? We get all kinds here, especially as ebooks are gaining popularity and our membership grows. And yes, the anonymity of the typical website often tends to inspire boldness and remove inhibitions in others. As you spend more time here, you may find yourself taking advantage of the "ignore" controls... they can be a help if certain people start to get on your nerves. (My ignore list has been long and illustrious at times...)

Is there a certain genius to "head-butting" though? I can't help but admire the amount of traffic and exposure that some of it seems to generate around here.

wow. that is so true. I come from a generation that was taught common courtesy. But that has diminished since most of the women of my generation have either opted to or had to join the workforce. I guess the "babysitters" just weren't as interested in instilling common courtesy in children as their mothers.
