PRS 650 light wedge?

One of the things my wife likes best about my PRS505 is the light wedge cover (she can sleep while I read in bed).

This feels like a stupid question (given that that it's a touch screen), but would the PRS650 work with a light wedge?

The light wedge for the 505 sits on top of the screen. Since the 650 is a touch screen, anything that sits on top of it would cause many random inputs/page turns (I know because I tried it with my 600).

It could work if you have the wedge hovering above the screen but not actually touching it.

Thanks, grooks - that's pretty much the answer I was expecting.

I suppose I was hoping that the infra-red touchscreen system might have circumvented the problems caused by the wedge resting on the screen.

Most light covers now, simply incorporate an LED on a flexible stem. The better ones have a lens that properly diffuses the light so it covers the whole screen.

I'm aware of the stem-mounted lights, but they seem fiddly somehow - all that folding in and out. The wedge light is simple, solid and protects the screen - plus, I've got used to it.

My girlfriend loves her lightwedge and is the only reason she refuses to upgrade her 505.

See, I hated my Lightwedge but loved my 700. I had a lightwedge on my old 505 and I went through three of them. We must have gotten a bad batch down here with the dust inside the different layers.

I'm with you, Mediax. The light wedge might not be perfect, but that simplicity makes it perfect for use in total darkness. Since most of my reading is after my wife's lights out, it will be very difficult to give up my 505 even though I really want a 650.

The illuminated cover for the Kindle 3, which has a pull-out light, works superbly well. It's really much better than a light wedge.

That sums up my situation exactly.

Now, if only I hadn't bought a light wedge to start off with, I'd be sorted!

I don't doubt that Harry.

I'm suspect that once I've made the change (and hauled myself out of the mud I'm stuck in) I'll wonder why on earth I didn't get one sooner.

I must have gotten a bad one too. The one I had was like looking through muddy water, and it scratched very easily. I hated it.

I loved the lightwedge with my 505. I bought the 650 with the lighted cover and it works quite well. It is not bulky and reading in the dark is actually much clearer than the 505 with lightwedge. I don't think the light pollution is different from the lightwedge. Both have some spill over of light.

I just got the 650 with the Sony lighted cover for my wife. I was concerned that the light would be too bright (based on past experience with LED booklights from Mighty Brite). However, the Sony light is not too bright - it puts out enough light, even on the dim setting, to read comfortably.

I'm curious to see how long the light lasts though. The mechanism to turn it on/off appears to be relatively fragile. The rest of the cover/light seems well enough made though.

I had the Sony lighted cover for my 300 and the switch never wore out, and I used it a lot. Hopefully the newer ones are just as rugged. I never timed it, but the battery charge would last weeks. However, I didn't use it everyday.
