On Saturday South Africa was in an ideal spot to see a somewhat rare event. The occultation of Venus by the Moon. (Occultation is just a fancy way of saying that one object hides another by moving in front of it).

I took a few photos and compiled a composite image. This image has now been featured on the front page of www.spaceweather.com, a NASA supported site.

To those not familiar with astronomy sites, this is kinda similar to getting a video of your garage band played on national TV.

This is so uber cool I just had to share it!

I love, love the blue color... My favorite color.

The video helped to show it much better than the still images (although, I did like the composite photo).

They spent the day watching and this is what my daughter had to say.

'occultation and timing it. The egress was so beautiful with the crescent tips of a very bright Venus emerging from the edge of the lit crescent of the Moon. We watched it through the telescope but it was visible to the naked eye. I looked up your position on one of my astronomy programmes and saw that for you it was below the horizon and so not visible.'

I think that they usually use Stellarium.
