Post Brontë, Emily: Wuthering Heights. v3. 10 Sep 2010

"Wuthering Heights" is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte.

Description from Amazon:

In a house haunted by memories, the past is everywhere ...As darkness falls, a man caught in a snowstorm is forced to shelter at the strange, grim house Wuthering Heights. It is a place he will never forget. There he will come to learn the story of Cathy: how she was forced to choose between her well-meaning husband and the dangerous man she had loved since she was young. How her choice led to betrayal and terrible revenge - and continues to torment those in the present. How love can transgress authority, convention, even death. And how desire can kill.

A masterpiece. Enjoy!

I wonder why people are so obsessed with this book? I heard it doesn't have a good ending. Maybe like Romeo and Juliet? Or are they so star-crossed that people can relate to it in some way? I'm mildly curious about this one because my colleagues would list this book as their "all time favorites".

Maybe a first step to cure your mild curiosity would be to actually read it?

Could I request the addition of Charlotte's "Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell" please? Apparently Charlotte wrote this in an edition of Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey published in 1850, after her sisters' deaths.

It's included in this text version:
https://ia801203.us.archive.org/1/it...ronte_djvu.txt

Would be great to have a better version of this with a TOC. Unfortunately I have no idea how to do this myself.
Thanks.

Please move this to the Requests if it belongs there.

@BookCat --- I will take a try at it, although it might take a bit to complete.
I have hunted down the 1847 first edition and mean to add Charlotte's "Notice" and also her "Preface" to the first edition text (hope that doesn't seem too much like blasphemy to purists).

Interestingly enough, the first edition used double-quotation marks (makes me happy! -- poor vision, single quotes more difficult to see)

Will have to see how it goes...

Thanks GrannyGrump. Your efforts are much appreciated.
I've just finished reading a fictionalised novel about the Brontes - The Misses Bronte's Establishment, Amy Wolf. For anyone interested, this is fairly true to the facts but plays fast and loose with two of the Bronte family's fates. Also, the school which the sisters tried to establish does have one pupil: the first person narrator, which of course wasn't actually the case. It's a flawed but light, fun read.
