Family Friendly Books
I'm interested in some newer fiction books that are 'family friendly'. What that means is I'd like to read something that has no swearing or sex in it. Any suggestions? I can't find any website that lists anything like that. Thanks.

No tips other than look to children's books and possibly books written before 1900 (as a rough figure) and books written by and targeting conservative religious groups. I don't really make note if the books I read have no swearing at all in them. (What's your cut-off line where a word is "too bad" for family reading?)

How newer is newer?
Have you read The Time Cavern? What about Enders Game and that whole series. (Bathroom and fart humor galore and a small amount of violence). What about Fabelhaven? When you say "family" what age do you mean? Do you mean books to read/listen to together? There are tons of kids books that are very good. Check out Lois Lowry's books. We listened to The Giver and Gathering Blue and Messenger on various car rides and they whole family enjoyed them. BOb |

I would also, perhaps to other people annoyance, recommend the Harry Potter series as family friendly. There is "romance" in it, "snogging" but no sex. The later books do get a bit dark though... so probably not for kids under 10 or so.

Bret Easton Ellis?
No - not really, sorry. Seriously, how about anything by P. G. Wodehouse? Tremendously funny, gentle comedy with nary a swearword or sex scene in sight. If you are in America P. G. Wodehouse may be a bit 'English' for you (although he wrote several set in America now that I think about it). The good news is that there are several of his books available here on MobileRead for free, so you can take a look without spending any of your hard-earned. EDIT: Missed the 'newer' qualifier - sorry. I'd still check them out though. Last edited by Bilbo1967; 08-31-2010 at 03:08 PM. |

![]() Harry... that said, I was a bit surprised at the content of Torchwood recorded from BBC that I have been watching. I am pretty sure the US version doesn't have all the swearing. The fairly explicit sex scenes in the second episode of season 1 is not something you see on prime time TV over hear. Most stuff like that is reserved for HBO or Showtime run shows. BOb |

There are lots of Christian fiction books at Amazon that are good. I have The Outsider on my TBR list. It was on of the freebies from Koland's list for August. I'll see if I can locate it and post the link.

Well, going by what TV censors do, I'd say you could read any of the Star Trek books.

Also, a lot of recent kids movies are based on good kids books. The Bridge To Tarabethia, The Inkheart books, The Pagemaster, etc. BOb |

There are too many good free books to do individual links. Go to the top of this page, click "forums", and near the top of the list are " free and bargain" and "reading recommendations". I think you will find plenty to love there. I don't like violence either, and prefer nice language also.
