People that own eReaders have blood in their veins - FACT

So there I was, waiting for a blood test in the phlebotomy department. It was just before 9am, and there were about 100 other people in the waiting room. I'd planned ahead, and took my Sony along to while away the hour(s).

As I settled down to read a tale of occult mystery and suspense, a guy standing next to me (due to there being no more chairs free) leant over and said, "Do you know you can get a leather cover for that?".

To cut a long story short, mainly because I'm getting bored of this story myself, he'd been given a Sony Reader as a present from his wife. He didn't know what model, but was extremely impressed with what it could do. Etc.

So after a ten minute chat, I settled down again to read a tale that would test the nerves of the most stoic of people. After a few minutes reading, a middle aged lady sat on the (now free) seat on my other side to the previous eReader owner. She took out a paperback, and was about to read it when she must have spotted the Sony in my lap. "Oh they're wonderful, aren't they?", she said. And there then followed a 15 minute chat, where I found that she too owned a Sony Reader.

During this current conversation, I glanced past her to the row in front of us, and saw an older gentleman engrossed in the act of reading. On a Sony Reader.

It really amazed me, that there were (at least) 3 other owners of eReaders within touching distance of me, in a room full of 100+ people!

Lies! I am, in fact, a vampire, and I know for a fact that ereaders are very big among the vampire community because their battery life reflects our own longevity. Lesser devices using LCDs are of no use if they run out of juice when the sun is up and there's no power outlet in your coffin.

Yep, they're catching on.

The only problem is that when one doesn't want to be interrupted while reading, one sometimes has to hide or just read paper books.

It is the same problem playing chess in public. Everyone who plays wants to chat, even though I need 100% of my brainpower for the game. Not wanting to be a jerk, I chat and lose.

Where's my IV? Where's the nearest coffee shop? (no, not you, *bucks - I said "coffee").

It is very impressive, considering the fact that I own Sony ebook readers from Jan 2007 and have yet to see somebody with any (let alone Sony) ebook reader.

I suppose it was like that for laptop owners back in the day when laptops were a newfangled gadget that only hard-core geeks owned. And I suppose in the near future, ereaders will be as common in doctor's offices and post offices and other places people wait, as paper books are now.

I used to get that a year ago when I took out my netbook. Not anymore. I imagine that, a year or so from now, an e-reader will no longer be a conversation piece. (He said bloodlessly.)

I saw a guy on the train the other day reading a first-generation Kindle. It was kind of sweet.

I am starting to see lots of ebook readers in the wild--mostly Kindles, but there are a few Sony Readers in the mix. I have yet to see a nook, which surprises me. Also there are lots of people on the train every day petting iPhones and other smartphones, and it stands to reason that some of them at least are reading ebooks.

On a flight from Seattle to Sacramento the other day, a girl in my row had a black Sony PRS-600 just like mine. First time I'd seen another one out in public, but I've only had my first reader about a month, so probably paid no attention before that.

A friend of mine has a Kindle and another has a Sony one.
However, I have yet to see any in the "wild" yet.
