B&N ePub unlock code fails
I just got my new Jetbook today with firmware 35c (not 34g). I downloaded 35m and installed it. The Jetbook now tells me that I have "Software v0.35m Patch v18".
I downloaded an ebook directly into a folder on a SD card and put it in the reader. When I tried to open it I was asked for my Unlock Code. I entered it (Name and CC#) and was told the unlock code failed. I tried to enter the code several times making sure I had entered it correctly, but still it failed. I got a freshly formated Fat16 1G SD card and a fresh firmware download and started all over again. I used two separate SD cards for updating and for my ebooks. Still fails. Any ideas? Thanks - John |

It appears that for B&N DRM ePub files the unlock data needs to be entered exactly as
your name appears when you setup your B&N account and the CC# without spaces. For the Secure eReader DRM pdb the name may be different (spaces may be allowed). Luck; Ken Last edited by Ken Maltby; 08-26-2010 at 10:27 PM. |

Thanks Ken. I entered my case sensitive name without spaces and I'm up and running.
May be of interest: Read a DRM free and aDRMd copy of the same book and the DRM free copy formats much better. Go figure. Regards - John |

I don't understand this. I have some B&N free books that I had downloaded with their Nook for PC app. When I copied them to the JBL, I was asked for an unlock name and code. Here's my dumb question--how am I supposed to be connected to B&N so they can verify my info?

You don't need to be connected to B&N. It sounds as if these are eReader-format files. The DRM on these uses the credit card number that you purchased the book with as the encryption key.

That's what I entered, though. And I get a msg "Failed to Open File."

The B&N .epub DRM also uses the credit card name and number as unlock data, but for
some reason with the B&N you need to enter both the name and the number without spaces. For eReader.com, you need the spaces, in the name, as they are on your credit card. Luck; Ken |

Aha! Thank you so much--taking the space out of my name worked. Never even considered that; it's certainly not intuitive. Your help is much appreciated!
P.S. I'm just rereading one of the previous msgs which mentions entering case-sensitive name w/o spaces. Totally missed that last night, sorry. FYI, though, when I entered the code this a.m., I used full caps for my name and it worked. Last edited by Catlady; 10-07-2010 at 10:33 AM. Reason: P.S. added |
