Price expectations?

I'm currently choosing my first reader and leaning heavily toward the Kindle, based on price and book selection. Probably aiming for an early October purchase (b-day), but could hold out until X-mas if it was worth it to. I've also handled Nooks and Sonys in stores recently and could go that way if they had a significant price advantage

I'm curious how you all think the prices will fluctuate between now and the end of the year. I saw the article posted here about stuff maybe going under $100 dollars.

Would Kindle cut their price again so dramatically so soon? Maybe to officially corner the market. I guess my #1 question would be: has Amazon had Holiday sales on Kindle previous years?

I'm leery of the off brands that are probably gonna be driven from the market, but maybe they'll liquidate w/ deals too good to refuse?

Would Nook or Sony go $99 as a hail mary?

Maybe my perception of the Kindle's inevitable dominance is off, but I'm surprised Nook has not met their price (at least 25 bucks off when you count tax). Makes me think they can't and thus won't.

Just still trying to figure out which one to get and when to get it. I'm probably lucky Amazon has the 3 week backlog-- made it easier for me to not just dive in.

I think when they say readers may go down close to the $100 they mean ones that don't offer as much as the nook or Kindles, or less known brands. I would think the Kobo would go down before Christmas to somewhere around the $120-$100 mark.

The Nook may go on sale, but they just dropped the price so I doubt it. There is a new one coming out, but maybe they will offer a $20 gift certificate or something instead. I also doubt the Kindle will get any cheaper by Christmas.

I can't see the future, so who knows. You can always wait and see what happens.

I've heard rumors about the possibility of a new Nook being released soon, but have been unable to confirm this. Do you have any additional information on that?

I was just told by a sales guy that a new Nook was coming in the fall. He said it should be more comparable to the Kindle DX, but who knows if his info was correct. They are selling text ebooks now, so maybe they want to cash in on the students.

I doubt we'll see prices drop that dramatically. If anything we'll start to see the competition drop some of their prices to either dump products that are no longer competitive or match $140-$150 price point that the kindle is pushing.

If you really want a kindle you should probably just pull the trigger. Think of it this way: even if the price drops by $20, you're still only paying $20 to have the kindle for five months. If you're saving on buying ebooks vs. regular books, then its likely you've come out ahead for those five months anyway.

The Kobo will probably be reduced to US$99-109 by the holidays. But Amazon will have no reason to decrease the price of the new Kindle3 units for a while. Do not wait until "possible" end-of-year savings of a couple bucks - buy one now and start enjoying it.
