Free Book (Nook/Kindle/Sony/Christianbook/iBooks) - The Pawn

The Pawn ($7.99 Kindle), by Steven James, the first in The Patrick Bowers Files trilogy, is free from Barnes and Noble today. This book was free in the Kindle store last November.

Book Description
As an environmental criminologist, Patrick Bowers uses 21st-century geospatial technology to analyze the time and space in which a crime takes place. Using an array of factors, Bowers can pinpoint clues to solve the toughest of cases. Bowers's skills have made him one of the FBI's top agents-until now.

Called to the mountains of North Carolina to consult on a gruesome murder, Bowers finds himself in a deadly duel with a serial killer who seems to transcend Patrick's analytical powers. Forced to track the killer's horrific murders one by one, Bowers finds his techniques and instincts are put to the ultimate test...

Thanks for sharing.

For those who care, it's from a Christian publisher and one of the reviews notes that faith plays a significant role in the series.

Free Book (B&N) - The Pawn by Steven James (Thriller )

The Pawn by Steven James is free at Barnes & Noble. This thriller has a 4-1/2 star rating at B&N. Here is their description:

In this riveting thriller, the first of a planned trilogy, James (Story) introduces FBI agent Patrick Bowers. His professional specialty is environmental criminology, which attempts to track lawbreakers by analyzing the significance of the time and place at which the crime occurred. When corpses of young women start turning up near Asheville, N.C., Bowers is called in. The killer's MO is to tie a yellow ribbon in his victims' hair and leave a chess piece somewhere on the scene. Bowers begins to suspect that the governor of North Carolina, rumored to be the next Republican presidential contender, is somehow connected to the murders, and that a cult with links to Jonestown might also be involved. Making matters trickier, the special agent supervising Bowers turns out to be a longtime colleague with whom Bowers has some bad blood. Bowers, a recent widower with a surly teenage stepdaughter to raise, tries to keep his grief and parental confusion at bay so that he can focus on the case as the killer targets more innocent women. Christian faith makes a subtle appearance in the story and appears to be a theme that will be developed in future installments. A gripping plot and brisk pacing will win James some fans eager for his next offering.

Yeah, I got mine almost one year ago.

I haven't read it, so maybe I'll throw it in the trash.

Since it's been available for so long, has anyone on MobileRead actually read it? (I already read what Amazon readers had to say.)

I haven't read it (mostly because it is in a folder with all the other christian fiction freebies we've received - my mom and dad will read them though, so I haven't deleted them).

I just wonder, though, why we are being over-run with duplicate threads lately (other than enthusiasm of those who have just discovered us and free books)?

My own opinion as Moderator is that there is an increasing specificity as to what ebook Reader is being addressed. Plus, I personally feel like there are more freebies as ebook awareness increases, and as the various ebook publishers try to increase market awareness.

In this particular case, I think it's because B&N just announced this on their Nook blog as one of the two "Free Friday" books, even though this one's been free for a while.

As for the dupes, I think it might have to do with Inkmesh and eBooks AddAll being glitchy and possibly relisting books as "new" freebies each time the price changes in another store, so people following them via Twitter or RSS or the like get the announcements and think it's something that hasn't been posted yet.

Not to mention, plenty of people never bother to read the manual, much less any posting guidelines or check past the first page of a forum (sometimes not even scrolling down), so they'll likely start new threads instead of bumping up old ones if they don't see it right away.

I think all of those contribute. Don't forget "don't bother to try the search function" on your list of why they keep duplicating threads.

For newbies who think they are being picked on ... generally, we try to have one thread per title for the free books. In that thread, add any additional stores or formats if a book becomes free somewhere other than the original. If there is only a single platform/store with the book free, add that to the title "Free book (Kindle) -- title", for example; if it later becomes free in other places, add your info to the end of the thread and send a moderator a private message asking for the title to be updated.

Please include the genre in the main body of your posting, if not readily apparent from the description, especially if it is Christian Fiction or from a "Christian publisher". Failure to follow this rule generally results in long debates over the value of the book and the sneakiness of Christian publishers in offering free books (that may or may not contain a message).

If you notice any geographic restrictions on a title, you can add those to the post as well; otherwise, either note which country you are in in the post (or add it to your profile, so it always shows) -- failure to follow this "rule" generally results in many people posting that they can't buy the book, some of them quite vocally calling for lynching of anyone daring to post a free book that they then found that they could not access.

actually I believe a new thread was created because it was the featured "Free Friday" book for the Nook and Nook apps. It's not a press release to say it's a new one but just the featured one on 9/3/10. that's all.

Interesting there has been no response to this. I like the concept of the series -- The Pawn, The Knight, The Rook -- but I was put off by some readers at Amazon saying the books are pretty gory. I read one James Patterson -- Violets are Blue, one of the Alex Cross tales -- and that was more gruesome than I really want. A serial killer is one thing (geez, this is a popular genre), but I'm not inclined to want to linger over the demise or the splatters.

I keep reminding myself as so much material is dangled in front of me free: at about 50 books a year, I have between 1500 ad 2000 more books I can read before I'm dead. And there are a few things I'm interested in re-reading. It helps me cull a TBR list.

This book should really be called The Revenant; it keeps returning to haunt our e-readers again and again. At least the Xmas newbies can get a copy to joke about when it comes back next year?

Free once more @ B&N, Amazon (available to Canadians, but not yet in the UK), might end up at Sony and/or Christian Book as well.

It seems the Baker/Revell/Bethany House freebies have returned to a normal few-days-at-a-time schedule, so this may linger for awhile.
