Can a second reader be authorised to same library?

I recently purchased a second PRS-300 for my wife. I have been unable to load anything from the library onto it. It would appear that the only answer is to de-authorise the original reader. I am led to believe this will delete the library contents and those on the original reader. I have a pretty extensive library built up and don't want to 'accidently' lose it.
Will using my laptop count as another computer to enable the second to be authorised if I copy the library over to it.
Can anyone suggest a way around this?
I have looked at Sony's website but it is not helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Question
Where do I find the remaining number of devices that I can authorize with my account?

Answer

You are allowed to authorize up to six computers (via Reader Library) and up to six portable devices (via USB and/or wireless) to your account.

To see what devices you currently have registered to your account:

1. Launch the Reader Library software.
2. Go to Reader Store.
3. Click on "My Account" and Sign in.
4. In the "My Devices" section you will see how many, and what devices, are authorized to your account.

You can click on "Manage / Rename Devices" for additional options.

A few questions might help us solve the problem:
Is the second PRS-300 new or used?
Did you succeed in authorizing the second PRS-300 to the same account.
The second reader and a laptop, if you intend to use the laptop, will both be counted as devices.

I have two readers associated with the same account and working fine with my PC and netbook.

I don't think Sony does a great job of the software or infrastructure backing their products (exception being Playstation Network, but that's a tale for a different post). The problem is that when it comes to DRM, the more devices that go between the server and your reading device, the more complicated it gets. That's why solutions like Kindle and nook that download directly to the device wirelessly are going to excel at usability. I predict that the next iteration of Sony Readers will all have wireless capability to some degree.

The second reader is brand new (and empty).
Both readers appear in 'MySony' account.
Both readers appear seperately in the reader library.

What happens if you just drag stuff from your Library (or even from the first reader) into the 300?

So...when you drag an ebook from the Reader Library to the new PRS-300 it won't let you and you get an error? Or it will let you put an ebook on the new reader but you can't open it?

One more question. Are the eBooks in question in LRX, encrypted BBeB, format?

When I drag a 416.9kb file it says it's processing but nothing happens. I don't get an error it just continues to show processing. Not sure what format the books are in. I think there was various formats to start with. All the books in the library transferred easily to the original reader.

The file type is displayed in a column when the Reader Library is in list view, or is accessible through the information icon, the letter i, from the thumbnail view as shown in the attached example.

A transfer of one file should only take a few seconds.

Is it possible that you have set up the new reader to sync with your Reader Library?

Great!! There should be no problems with ePub files the way you have things set up. Encrypted BBeB file types (extension LRX) have been known not to display on readers authorized after December 2009, but the system usually asked you to download the ePub version if it is available.

As long as the files are epubs or pdf you can put them into Adobe Digital Editions. That's how I share books with my wife's Nook. It works with the Sony as well.
