Two Free "Books" (Kindle) - The Girl on the Beach & Mysterious Profile #24
The Girl on the Beach, by Charles Todd, is the first of two free pre-orders in the Kindle store store tonight. This one is most likely a new short story or novella in the Bess Crawford Mystery series and will release at the same time as An Impartial Witness ($10.99), the second in the series, on releases Aug 31.
Mysterious Profile #24: Ian Rutledge, also by Charles Todd, is the second of two free pre-orders in the Kindle store store tonight. This one releases on October 12 and fits somewhere into the Ian Rutledge series (obviously), but again doesn't appear to be a full novel from that series. I'd bet that it was originally published in the Mysterious Bookshop's newsletter (although I could not find that issue, just the current on that mentions that the Mysterious Profile series is on hiatus). The next release in this series will be A Lonely Death, next January, but it isn't listed at Amazon yet. Last edited by Dr. Drib; 09-01-2010 at 12:25 PM. |

I've seen a cute pulldown in someone else's screen grab, but I don't get one of those (perhaps you only get one if the IP address detected is EU or at least outside the US?) |

This has now just been done. However, I must point out that the knowledge that a book is geographically restricted often doesn't come to light until a Member here mentions this in a post. At that point, if I see it (I can't speak for other Moderators) then I immediately add that information. ![]() Don (Moderator) |

Girl on the Beach is now one of the featured freebies in the Sony store's Bargain Priced Category page. Geo-restricted to US-only, though.
These should be popping up in the other stores, too. Apparently it's part of a special promo push, as detailed in Publisher's Weekly, which says that there should be 3 freebie stories by Todd in all. They'll be free for 2 weeks and come with bonus excerpts from upcoming novels. |

Sony does that sometimes on some books, and it varies. The buy-button on HarperCollins "Free with Bonus Material" stuff is usually, but not always, greyed-out to US-only in the store, but it's not even a consistent "by publisher" thing.
For example, three of those Zonderkidz titles yesterday were US-only, and the 4th available to Canadians even though it was by the same author as 2 of the others. Same pattern, or lack of it, with a bunch of them from that batch of 10 Zondevan freebies 1 or 2 months ago. But it also works in reverse. That Kensington Bake Sale Murder title yesterday is completely unavailable in the Kindle store to Canadians, but we can get it free from Sony. |

Ian Rutledge: Mysterious Profile #24 has apparently gotten to the pre-order date. Now free and available for download @ Kobo for Canadians and likely others.

There is now a nice review (by J. Lesley) of the Ian Rutledge book up on Amazon. It kind-of is a book and it kind-of is only a sample...
Actually, it is an essay from the author of the Ian Rutledge series that discusses how the character and the setting were developed. It then goes on to add samples from three different books, and finishes with a chronology of the series. So, if you like the series or the craft of writing you will probably find it to be an interesting read. However, if you are looking for a fictional novel you may be disappointed. |
