Kindle3 and Pre-Order Shipping

Hi all,
I've never pre-ordered from Amazon before and am curious to know peoples' experiences. I'm going on vacation Aug 29th and am located in Canada, curious to know whether I might expect the kindle on release day, or whether I'd be able to re-route the shipment to where I'm going if I don't receive it that day?

I've already contacted Amazon about this, but their answer was non committal.

I placed my order this morning, and I was given no estimated shipping date. I think you are too late.

All the comments I've read from those who pre-ordered state that they got no confirmed shipping date on the Kindles, but they got Aug 27 shipping dates on the covers. The same is true for me, and I ordered on the day they were announced.

Oh, that makes me feel better. I know there was a huge wait when the kindle first came out. Unless a ship gets seized in Customs, I would expect to have my K3 in my hands on August 27. I still remember ordering Harry Potter books from Amazon, and was amazed that they came just when they said they would.

To answer your original question...

Some people have reported receiving their pre-ordered Kindles on release day BUT... those individuals had selected overnight shipping and ordered as soon as announced. Still possible I would think.

As Amazon doesn't really have a firm ship date yet, there would be no way for them to commit with a time frame. Best bet would be to order and make sure there would be someone available to collect and keep the package for you if you are unavailable. I doubt they would "re-route" an order.

When I ordered the Kindle DXG, I used my Amazon Prime and bought one day shipping.

I got it on the release date. Same with my old DX. I don't see why it would be any different for the K3.

I only did 2-day shipping, but considering it says,

and not, "PreOrder Now and choose overnight shipping to ensure release-day delivery," I still half-expect it on my doorstep on the 27th. Since they're making promises about delivery right on the page, you'd think they'd tell you which method of shipment you need to choose for them to meet that obligation if it were something special, no?

I guess another way to gauge when you'll get it, as it gets closer to the date, is to see when your card is actually charged, and treat that as the shipping date (don't they only charge you once it's shipped?)

Hmm, so it sounds like I should probably get it delivered to where I'll be vacationing. The same day shipping seems to mostly apply to the US, so am a bit concerned. We're staying at my girlfriend's mother's, so might as well just do that.

I've never pre-ordered anything. Does the payment come out of your account when you order, or when the item is available to ship?

My experience is payment made when ready to ship. Open orders can be checked at any time and there is a drop-down menu that will display shipping options that may be changed at any time prior to "preparing to ship."

Unless you use a gift card balance. If you use a gift card, it charges that immediately at the time of order.

When I purchased the Kindle 2i in Nov, 2009, the only option for Toronto was "international courier". I ordered Thursday at 3:30 pm; it arrived (by Canada Post) at my front door Friday at 1:00 pm ... 21.5 hrs later.

I expect any order placed so early from Canada -- like now -- will arrive on Fri Aug 27 with "international courier" but certainly by the following Mon or Tue.

But if you are not actually home the week of Aug 30 ... I think I'd consider making the delivery address where you expect to be. Worst case: it shows up before you do.
