I went ahead and downloaded this one because I'm a diehard Sharyn McCrumb fan. She is one of those writers who can really change genres at the drop of a hat. St. Dale, which I read in paperbook a while ago, is nothing like her Appalachian books, and she's got a few other "odd" ones as well. I can't say that I really follow NASCAR, but as a rule Ms. McCrumb is able to command my interest in whatever she chooses to write about.

She was just here for a book signing, as well; two days before the first freebie and although I had noted it to try to attend (I have a few paperbacks in the Appalachian series), I spaced it and didn't go.

are this 2 ebooks (St. Dale and Once around the track) still free for people in the USA?

As you can see by my username, I am a big NASCAR Fan, but I don't live in the USA, so I can't get it for free. Also I guess I couldn't read the kindle-format on my ebook-reader (Bebook One)

But still, if anyone could give me some more information about this 2 ebooks, I would be very thankful.

No, they're no longer free, but they're very good.

Sharyn McCrumb normally writes novels based on historical Appalachian tradition, and her books are taught in literary/culture university classes down in the States. Here's a link to her website with more info. You'll have to use the dropdown menu to navigate to each individual book page, because there isn't an easy listing which contains the bibliography.

She's written 3 car racing-related books so far.

I recommend you start with St. Dale, which is the best, and sort of a mash-up of NASCAR culture and the Canterbury Tales. It's won several awards and is one of the university-taught books, according to its page.

Once Around the Track is a fun entertainment read, not nearly as serious. There's some reading group questions and a fake interview the author did with the "driver" over at Kensington's webpage for the book.

Faster Pastor is not serious at all, and is a light adventure story that's kind of like Pixar's Cars. I borrowed it from the library and liked it, but it's very lightweight.

These books are all published by non-Agency publishers, so you can get them with a discount coupon via Kobo. There's currently a 35% off one in the Deals forum here, and TryKobo for $2 off is one of the current ads I see running on the MR forum when I visit from a browser I'm not logged in on.

Be very careful when entering the Kobo coupon to make sure that the discount has gone through, because their CS is really rather overwhelmed right now and will try to weasel out of fixing things if something goes wrong, in my admittedly limited experience.

If St. Dale and Once Around the Track aren't available in your location due to geo-restriction, you can always get Faster Pastor direct from Smashwords, where the publisher has put it up for sale. You can also get it via Kobo, but be warned that Kobo currently has this site issue where it's been DRMing books that are supposed to be DRM-free.

Another free NASCAR-related book which I don't know whether or not you'll be interested in is Harlequin's Speed Dating, from their NASCAR Romance line. It's a DRM-free download in several formats direct from the Try Harlequin site.

Finally, if you think you might be interested in stock car-related fantasy stories, the Baen Free Library has as a free download Born to Run, the first in Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge series, which has elves and humans working together to break their small regional racing concern into the big time, and also rescue abused children. But it's not NASCAR and I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
