DECE's 'digital locker' take-anywhere DRM, UltraViolet, launches later this year

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/20/d...d-ultraviolet/

Quote:
We're still not sure if we believe in the promises made by the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) yet -- buy a piece of content once in physical or digital format, and gain access across all formats and devices via a cloud based account -- but we're closer to finding out for ourselves now that it has a new name, UltraViolet.
Adobe and Sony are members, according to the press release. Wonder if this will extend to ebooks.

I'm not excited by "cloud-based content." I like having my stuff on my own computer, backed up.

Am not a fan of the cloud. Yes, it is cool that you can access it everywhere, but it sucks that you have to have a constant internet connection, plus usually you have to view it through a web browser (which will give a lackluster experience with certain types of media).

Agreed.

Now if I can have the cloud as a secondary method of accessing my content I might be interested in some version of 'the cloud', but only if it's additional to having my own copy locally.

The only thing I could add to that is that cloud only would be fine for free stuff.

And when they decide that they no longer wish you to own the digital content - poof!

Nope. The whole premise of DRM is that we are not allowed to OWN that which we PURCHASE.

You're not paranoid enough. When they decide that oceana has always been at war with eastasia all the stuff in the cloud will change to match that "fact"

Our files are in the cloud until they decide to go with a new encryption scheme and tell us we're out of luck go rebuy everything.
