Optical Illusion Puzzle
A different kind of puzzle today!

What's the optical illusion demonstrated by this image? I'm not looking for a technical name, just a description of what you can see in this image that isn't true.

Oh — I don't mean the moiré effect in the small thumbnail.

[Edit]Added another version of the illusion, where I've removed the anti-aliasing. The results in moiré effects, but you may (try) to ignore these.

No, that's not it. I've added another picture with the centre removed (because I've also turned off anti-aliasing with the new picture, and the centre detail is too fine to work without anti-aliasing).

If there is any apparent warming of the colours towards the centre, it's an artefact of the conversion from an eps to pixels.

The illusion isn't a small effect that you have to strain to see.

I might be without internet access over the weekend — I'll post the answer to this puzzle on Monday.

What appear to be green and blue spirals are actually spirals of the same colour - the effect is achieved by the different coloured fine lines that cross the spirals. Our brain wants to see these fine lines as the same colour but in order to do so it has to see the spirals as different colours.

The only thing I see is the funky color blending.
It looks like the only actual colors in the spiral are cyan, magenta, and orange, but the overall effect gives the appearance of blue, red, and green.

It doesn't matter what you've done, even with the centre detail removed there is still an apparent change in the colour from the outer to the inner.


No straining involved.....

For what it's worth:

I don't understand why, but there are not as many colours as first appears. In fact, the blue and the green are apparantly the same colour.

To demonstrate, I copied the image into a graphics editor, and used the color picker tool to get the underlying colour values. For both the green and the blue, it showed up as RGB(0,255,150). That colour normally renders as a very bright green.

Somehow the interaction of the blue/green with the neighbouring colours is causing the effect. But, as I said, I don't really understand it.
