Libre vs. Jetbook
I'd like to find a reasonably priced eReader in order to have the ability to borrow books from my local library. Any advice on which of these would be the best choice?

definitely check out the jetBook or the jetBook LITE. Ectaco just released a PR yesterday that they both will support Adobe DRM along with the 13 original formats so you get all the books you want and a very reasonable price, if not the lowest on the market.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think with the recent firmware by Ectaco, the Libre and Jetbook both pretty much cover the same formats. I think you can choose one or the other based upon the lowest price you can get.

One more question....Does the Libre have a clock? I noticed in another thread that the Jetbook doesn't thereby making it possible to keep library books for a longer period. That would be a nice perk.

The ALP never could read the B&N DRM pdb or their new ePub DRM.
B&N just added DRM ePub to their line up BUT the DRM is not ADE ePub compliant. So for B&N The JB-Lite reads DRM pdb and the JB with .35e FW reads ADE DRM ePub/PDF as well as B&N's new DRM ePub - not sure about pdb DRM. In .35? they also added Text Flow on/off for PDF viewing and ePub now has active TOC just like PDF had. ePub lost access to dictionary look-up and find. all the units can access DRM free ePub. The JB and the ALP are the same physically so they both have a clock in the o/s. If you want unlimited rental time on an ADE epub ebook just remove the DRM after the download. Both the JB w/FW .35? and the ALP can support most Public Library ebooks because of ADE and Overdrive support. Right Now the JB with FW .35e supports more formats, includes a limited dictionary and gives you active TOC support w/ePub docs that have that feature defined. The ALP does not as of this post. I installed or applied FW .17d for the ALP thinking it may add active Toc for epub and it did not. I do not know what .17d fixed.

I downloaded a ASCM from my library that turned into an ADE epub and it cannot be read on my Jetbook. Am I missing a step or is this an upcoming update?

Ok so that is they way it is suppose to work.
You buy the book and are given a link file that is used by ADE software on your PC to do the download and authorize the ebook to your PC. Now you need to authorize your JB to ADE. This is only done once. While your ADE software is up you connect your JB via USB to your PC and wait. If you have firmwares .35a through to .35k on your JB it will be detected by the ADE software. If you haven't already it will ask if you want to authorize the JB. Once you do this I believe a file is created or modified on the JB that contains the key that will be used to grant access to your ePub/PDF ADE DRM e-book. I am not sure if you have to migrate the e-books via ADE through the USB or if you can just copy them to the card via an SDcard reader/writer. By default the e-books are loaded to the internal memory folder but you can move the whole folder to the SD card just leave the original ADE files on the internal memory so that the unit continues to be authorized even if the SD card is removed. Just play around and you will find out what works. John |
