Reading epub files on Aluratek Libre
Hi,
Just got my Libre, and after having done a few experimentation, I think that, for me, you get the best reading experience with epub files. Except regarding one thing: with any epub file I could try, there are boring "page numbers" displayed occasionally in the right margin of the screen (occasionally meaning roughly every 3 screen/page down). These "page numbers" are overlapping the text displayed on the screen and are very annoying. How to make them disappear? (if possible). It may worth to note that I am still with firmware v0.15k patch v15. Aluratek site seems to have changed recently, and I cannot find firmware update page. I would like to know if somebody owning the Libre has noticed the same problem? I already opened a support ticket with Aluratek, expecting an answer soon (or later!). Thanks. |

As far as I know, there is no way to get rid of those page numbers. However, you can prevent them from overlapping the text by reformatting the page in Calibre. I have Calibre set to left justification with a 15 pt right margin. In order to use Calibre to do this, the book cannot be DRM. There is a Calibre forum on Mobileread.

That's a bad news...
I use calibre and I already tried the fix you suggest. It works OK except that it makes you loose space on a screen which is already not very large... Is the jetbook exhibiting the same problem? |

I found that actually .mobi provides a bit nicer interface. Experiment with some of the formatting options, if you're converting your own books. It moves the page count to the top bar and along the side is a slim "scrollbar" that shows you where you are visually. That, and the d-pad works for page turning too.

I've noticed it too, but I have learned to ignore it.

I did try with mobi format also, which is my favorite format to read ebooks on a netbook.
Unfortunately, mobi format is suffering too much major drawbacks on the Libre to my taste:
But I agree with you, on the Libre, the interface is a lot better when reading mobi format, than it is when reading epub format… It looks like I will have to (try to) learn to ignore those pesky page numbers in the right margin when reading epub format ebooks… |

The jetBook suffers the same issue w/re the ePub. Under FW .35a and ePub now supports active TOC if defined and I am seeing images where as before I believe it would not display images as HTML or PDF does.
You lose dictionary access as well as "Find" function and now you have to zoom - no more font size steps. right and left arrow keys no longer advance/back-up the pages. John |

I just upgraded my jetBook to the latest firmware last night and posted on Ectaco's forum about the page numbers in the right margin, among other things.
I was told they are part of ADE, and sure enough if you open the book in the Adobe desktop app they are there, overlapping the text as well. I just read novels on the jetBook but I may have to give the latest little Kindle a try. A real dictionary and no more formatting issues. I buy all my books from Amazon anyway, and use their Kindle App on my Blackberry. DRM issues aside, Amazon has always been a first rate outfit as far as my experience is concerned. I think I want to give the higher contrast screen (compared to my Kindle 1) a try. Desertway thanks for the tip. |

I believe they are the page numbers that were asigned to the document when it was generated into a ePub document.
Just like you see sometimes when you come across a DTB that has been scanned in. The number of screens that you have to flip through before you advance the epub page number depends on your font size. What I don't know - I assume that ePub can be viewed via other readers or is ADE the owner of the format. If it can be viewed by other ePub readers, do they all produce the same characteristic side view page number? John |
