I thought that I would ask what kind of torture your reader has endured and how well it has survived. I have dropped my my unit 4 feet to a wooden floor. I have also dropped the unit a foot unto a plastic shelf on which it bounced and ten fell another 3.5 feet unto a tile floor. In both cases the unit continued to work flawlessly. I use the leather cover (the one it comes with makes me cringe like a scratch on a blackboard).
So how have you tortured your poor reader? |

I have been known to strap it on the back of my motorcycle and ride the 20 miles to work at 28 Degrees. No problems so far.

Slipped and it fell four feet to a cement walk in the standard case. No problems.

how about people's experiences with the screen? It seems like it's immune to cracking, but what about scratches? I haven't owned mine for long enough to know, but my impression is that the annoying glaring plastic they put on it is pretty resistant. I wonder, though, if it's also replaceable...

The one at my local borders has a cracked screen. It looks a lot like a broken monochrome LCD, runs, drips, and errors.

iLiad's screen is a glass backplane, I believe, so I don't thing it has to be one or the other.

I believe that all the current eInk devices have the "eInk" stuff on top of glass. Flexible plastic screens are the "next generation", from what I've read, and probably won't be with us until 2008.

Ah, but we're talking about rigid plastic screens -- the Sony Reader is definitely a (rigid) plastic screen.
