It seems that it's not just some screens that are defective... Some devices seem to almost totally lose reception when one touches the left side of the device (antenna band)

This is all normal in the release of new technology products, Apple or otherwise. What was amazing to me is how well the iPad launch went. I know there were some odd "WIFI" issues, but other than that the iPad launch was stellar. That is certainly the exception, and not the rule.

In the first run of these new products, there is going to be issues. That is why many wait until at least the second or third run to purchase.

There were about 80 people in the queue in front of me and, as I say, it took over 6h to reach the front of the queue. The Apple Store were selling both the SIM-free phone (which I bought) and contracts with 4 different operators, so it was taking an eternity to serve each customer and set up their contract for them. I bought the SIM-free phone, and then a SIM from Vodafone. They ran out of stock for non-reserved sale about 30 people after me, but apparently are due to get more tomorrow.

It wasn't only the Apple Store that had the long queues today, but also the mobile phone stores that had the iPhone in stock. The O2 store in particular had enormous queues, way longer than those at Apple. Luckily the Vodafone store (where I bought my SIM) didn't have the iPhone in stock, hence no queues.

Followup: my phone DOES have the reception issue, but it depends how you hold it. I'm left handed, and so hold the phone in my right hand. Doing that, there are no problems whatsoever. If you hold it in your left hand, and touch the bottom of the phone with your palm, the signal just slowly fades away to nothing. If you don't touch the bottom of the case, the problem doesn't occur.

EDIT: It's definitely touching the bottom edge of the case that's the issue. Hold it by the sides only, and it's absolutely fine.

That is pretty weird...so that three piece antenna thing must not be grounded correctly?

I think O2 were unique amongst the UK carriers in not allowing any pre-ordering at all, so if you wanted one and wanted to stick with O2 then your only option was to queue up.

I want one, but not so badly that I'm prepared to wait in line; 6 Hours Harry, that's dedication!

I took my son and his friends to Barnes and Noble for the midnight book release of the final Harry Potter book...not sure how long we waited in line for that...it felt like a week

It's sure looking that way. It's actually not a practical problem - you just have to hold the phone by its sides only. Do that and it's fine. But I'm sure there'll be those who will make out that it's the end of the world .

I'm rather surprised that it didn't show up in testing, because it's an immediately obvious effect. If you hold the phone by its edges, and then press your palm into the base of it, the signal slowly fades to absolutely nothing in about 15 sec. Take your palm away and it fades back in again to full strength in about the same time.
