ACSM file - anyway to download book without ADE?
I just checked out a book from the public library and downloaded the acsm file. I hate installing Adobe products (resource hogging bloatware) on my laptop. Is there anyway to download the ebook without installing Adobe Digital Editions?

You can also use the Sony software.

I don't have that installed either. Any other options?

So how does this work - ADE or Sony's software fetches the ebook, decodes it and leaves a viewable ebook on your hard drive? Which you then copy to your e-reader using Sony's software or Calibre? Does the ebook contain a self-killswitch that activates after the borrowing period is finished?

I generally use ADE as it doesn't seem to bog down my system like the Sony software sometimes does. |

Thanks.
And if I don't bother installing ADE or Sony, and never fetch the ebook using the acsm file, will the ebook be automatically 'returned' to the public library on the due date? |

In that case it doesn't have to be `returned' because you haven't even downloaded the book. The acsm file is just a description (or ticket) for the real thing.
