So I tried to use the dictionary on my PB360 for the first time...
and the definition came up in Russian. Is there some file I'm supposed to replace somewhere to get an English dictionary?
Thanks! |

OK -- read the thread. So did the Pocketbook folks end up uploading dictionaries somewhere on their site? Does anybody have a link? Thanks!

maxbookworm -
1) Pocketbook has that 1913 dictionary that GeoffC mentioned. Go to their downloads link at this site - http://www.pocketbookreader.com/Downloads.html - and select to download "Sample Dictionaries." It'll be a .zip file and once you un-zip it, you'll see the 1913 one. I "threw away" the others as I can't read those languages... 2) Also, there is a Russian site that offers some dictionary downloads. Here is a link to it (via Google Translate) - http://translate.google.co.uk/transl...en-GB:official Somewhere on that page, is the "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary," which I have downloaded and it appears to be English. Use the mirror site to access the download, as you'll get a 403 error if you try the main download link. As I've said, I've got both dictionaries, and they seem to work fine. They are the best English-English dictionaries we've got, at least until Pocketbook finishes working on the Abby Lingvo stuff (which is supposed to be available for separate purchase in June). Good luck. Marilyn |

If you sift through the various russian sites listed in various threads (themes, pics, apps, etc) you can find several dozen dictionaries, thesaurii, and other tools. English-english, spanish-spanish, wikipedia, and tons of translation dics.
The one link I have handy is here: http://xdxf.revdanica.com/down/ I d/l'ed a couple and they converted fine. |

At first I was excited about the dictionaries, but having tried a German-English one and found less than 50% of my lookups, I am no longer excited. I doubt that the Italian-English I was looking for (but never found) will be any better if and when it appears. In the meantime I will be satisfied if I can get the reader to read without crashing (rebooting), and I will keep a paper dictionary handy. Seems like the technology sometimes gets ahead of itself...

I have downloaded
En-En-Longman_DOCE5.doc, En-En-MWCollegiate11.doc and en-en_coed.doc I placed the MWCollegiate one in my PB 301's dictionary folder. The reader sees the name correctly but cannot recognize words. Does this dictionary require conversion first? |

They need to be in .dic format, not .doc format for them to work as dictionaries as far as I know.
You could load them up as .doc books though, although it wouldn't help you search other books through the dictionary menu. At least, that's how I interpret it. ETA: I've not converted a dictionary before, but yes, it sounds like these files need to be converted. |

I use Longmans DOCE 5th Edition and Oxford Advanced Learner's both work pretty well. Rarely do I find a word that one of them doesn't have. I use Longmans as the default.

Is there are link to an already converted version of the Longmans? It's not one I've come across before.

Thanks for this, jackie_w. I've also got the 1913 and the Oxford dictionaries ... but more never hurt.
