something similar to Shutter Island?

I read shutter island before the movie, and the book just blew me away. It was very well written and the ending really surprised me.

Can somebody recommend any other books like this one. I mean not the same author but some story that will keep you guessing and then end in a complete surprise. Thanks.

Agatha Christie And Then There Were None

Quote:
mazon.com Review
Considered the best mystery novel ever written by many readers, And Then There Were None is the story of 10 strangers, each lured to Indian Island by a mysterious host. Once his guests have arrived, the host accuses each person of murder. Unable to leave the island, the guests begin to share their darkest secrets--until they begin to die.

Review
'One of the very best, most genuinely bewildering Christies.' Observer 'The most astonishingly impudent, ingenious and altogether successful mystery story since The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.' Daily Herald 'One of the most ingenious thrillers in many a day.' Time Magazine 'There is no doubt that this is a highly ingenious jigsaw by a master of puzzling.' Books 'There is no cheating; the reader is just bamboozled in a straightforward way from first to last... The most colossal achievement of a colossal career. The book must rank with Mrs Christie's previous best -- on the top notch of detection.' New Statesman 'The whole thing is utterly impossible and utterly fascinating. It is the most baffling mystery Agatha Christie has ever written.' New York Times

It's not public domain, if that's the question. The Toronto library has approximately zero Agatha Christie in e-book format. But, they are adding more titles every couple of weeks it seems so there is hope. A good deal of the Christie novels are available around the $5 mark from Amazon and Kobo, depending on delivery charges. I am reading, with great pleasure at the moment, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd in a HarperCollins Kobo edition.

I tried our library's Overdrive site, and found 53 AC books in epub.

I've not read "Shutter Island" but the other posts brought a manga to mind: "They Were 11" by Moto Hagio. It's set in the far future where 10 students at an academy are sent for their final exam aboard a space station. Right after they arrive on the station the lights go out, and when the lights come back up there are 11 of them. Since the 10 students were wearing head-to-toe space suits that completely concealed their identities from each other no one knows who the 11th person is or why he/she is there. Based on the above description of "Shutter Island", "They Were 11" is similar in that it will keep you guessing until the very end. It has been adapted as an excellent anime movie.

Ira Levin's A Kiss Before Dying has some great twists. The movie versions tried, but there was no way to, uhm, screw with your mind in the way the book did. You'll know what I mean when you read it. I read it because Dean Koontz mentioned the twist in one of his books on writing, and he made me curious. It's also unusual in that the major twist comes about one-third of the way through the book rather than at the end. Unfortunately I can't find an e-book version.

Years ago, I read a serial killer novel called The Ultimate Game that had a major twist at the end. However, while the overall effect of the twist was really neat, I came away frustrated. There are twists that make readers gasp, and there are twists that make them say "Oh come on." Your mileage may vary, of course.

BTW, I finally read Ender's Game a couple weeks ago just to find out there's a movie right now. I'm out of touch with the old industry of book ripoffs
