Question new and where do I post for help?
Hi there,

Got my k2 a month ago and download a free book from smashwords in the kindle format (has a mobi ext). I've searched this site and others and can't figure out how to get this book from my laptop onto my kindle.

Do I need to convert it via calibre (which when added to file doesn't even bring the name of the book in, just a bunch of letters and numbers).

Do I just drag and drop from my laptop to the k2?

I'm so confused and frustrated now.

Connect your Kindle to your computer via USB. Open the Kindle (double click). It'll show up in My Computer on a Windows machine or on the desktop on a Mac. Once open you should see a folder called documents. Just drag your Mobi file into that folder and eject the Kindle and disconnect the USB. Once disconnected/ejected it should show up on your home screen (sort by most recent and it should be first on the list).

Welcome to MR, appasgirl.

You can check out the Kindle forum for information. I have the Sony and don't know a lot about the Kindle.

I did find a thread that might contain information you are looking for. Received Kindle as gift; have questions Posts # 3 and #4 look like they may have the information you want.

Hi Everyone!

Thank you for responding back to my question. I did get the answer on how to do it, but there is only one problem now. When I drag and drop the book onto the kindle when I go to read it, the title comes up as a bunch letters and numbers and NOT the title of the book. I tried changing it but that didn't work either. Does anyone know how to fix this as I don't have a clue as to what I am reading if I can't see the title.

Hello and welcome, appasgirl. I had the exact same problem with a book I bought from smashwords not long ago. I had to go into Calibre and change the Title of the book, which was set incorrectly and then transfer it back to my Kindle.

Sounds like the meta data is messed up. You can download Calibre and change then edit fields like Title and Author (either click the edit meta-information button or double click each field and change it on the main screen). Calibre will also transfer books to your Kindle if you prefer that to drag 'n Drop.

Why the authors at Smashwords doesn't pay closer attention to the things they upload is beyond me. It doesn't leave a good impression when you end up with erroneous meta-data.
