Auto-update function
Given that the updating frequency of Calibre is once a week, that is, pretty often, I wonder if, for the sake of convenience, an auto-update function could be built to be used optionally. I've seen the question has been posed by other users and even an enhancement ticket was sent, but maybe sthere are news about the case (the ticket is 7 months old, e.g.)
Thanks in advance ![]() |

I'm not so sure if auto-update is such a good idea. I prefer to wait until two or three days after an update for most software before I update to make sure reports of problems don't surface. Generally, if an update isn't security related and what one has isn't broken, why be in any hurry to "fix" it?

There is already the facility to at least inform you that there is a new release available. That gives you the option of whether to take the new release or not.
Trying to design and implement an auto-update facility that works across the wide range of platforms on which Calibre runs could be a lot of effort and I can understand why Kovid does not think it is a good investment of his time. |

That sounds like a sensible reason. Thanks for the update

Bump...
If not auto-update, but how about an in-app update feature (like VLC or some other apps). Opening the browser to update just interrupts my workflow and is annoying. |

You don't have to update the instant you receive the notification that an update is available. Just delete the notification, continue on with what you are doing, then update when it is convenient to do so. There is no need to interrupt your workflow. You don't have to update every time there is an update, either. I update only when there is a new feature or bug fix I'm interested in.

If you mean a manual check then you might want to go and put an enhancement request in. Find out how to put in an enhancement request here. |

That as opposed to the current behavior of launching the default browser and requiring you to navigate to the appropriate OS update page and manually downloading/executing it. |

I have the notification turned off. I get a message in the status bar saying that a newer version is available. Very undisruptive.

Just try it, it's intuitive enough.
