Question What does it take to buy iIliad in US?

Hi guys,

I am thinking about buying iLiad. I live in US and thought that maybe someone from US who already bought it may share his experience. I have the following questions:

1. The price on iRex website is 650 euro. I remember reading somewhere that this price includes VAT and if you order outside of Europe it is going to be subtracted. So, what is the real price in US dollars?

2. What are shipping costs and how much time does it take to ship iLiad to US?

3. Are there any customs fees that need to be paid?

4. Any other hidden fees?

Thank you in advance.

Their web site will calculate the full cost for you, something like $750 as I recall.

They ship all customs fees paid by shipper.

The only real "hidden issue" I had was that I had to exchange my unit 3 times to get a working one.

I read your story in another thread . I hope by now IRex has improved the quality of iLiad. How long did it take for you to receive it from the moment you ordered it (that is, for the first iLiad )?

Heh, wasn't it like, 6 weeks, scotty1024? Seriously, though it oughtn't take them as long now that they're farther into things, and there's not a huge scrum of orders. (hopefully)

The process was easy and shipping took about 3 days in total, but like Scotty it took me 3 tries to get a working unit. The first one wouldn't charge and the second one wouldn't even turn on. I haven't heard of any additional stories like that since Scotty and I posted about ours. Hopefully it's a fluke. My 3rd unit has been working just fine.

The VAT comes out of the total after they process it, so it's actually closer to $710, though their sloppy cart thing doesn't show it.

If you just want to read on it, you might be happier with the Sony anyway....

No calculator, no chess for Sony. :-)

No web browsing.

No notepad.

And that Sony screen looks so tiny and cramped after you've used the iLiad for awhile.

Funny how the things the Iliad does well have nothing to do with eBooks?

Meanwhile the Sony has an ebook store and a certain group of people complaining loudly about how over priced it is.

My wife's Sony died after only 2 hours of operation, right in the middle of reading her shiny new ebook she just bought for it. Sony service and support were impossible and they wound up having us return the unit for a credit e.g. they couldn't handle replacing it!

Each has its good, bad and down right ugly.

This and the input make the difference in price right there. If you need it, the Iliad is the tool. If only it was more reliable.

Buy the iLiad in North America

Check it out: cheaper (i.e. less expensive) than in Europe! :

At current exchange rates, that's ~ 530€, which is almost 20 percent less than the "official" price from the iRex shop.

@henk: Buying in N America is cheaper because americans dont have to pay VAT (an european tax). Buying in canada though, i had to pay GST (a 13% tax)

Those of us early adopters probably had a somewhat different exchange rate. Price could be higher since the dollar has been dropping of late. Not certain how frequently the iRex site takes exchange rates into consideration.
