Pocket Pro stuck on hour glass

I was trying to open a file I've had trouble with - an ePub file purchased from booksonboard.com - when the device got stuck on the hour glass. Now, I can't get it to turn off or reset. Here's what I've done:

- Hold down the power button (all I get is a red light and beeping).

- Hold in the reset button on back.

- Removed and replace the battery.

- Removed and replace the SD card.

When I plug it into the wall outlet to charge it, I get a flashing red (long) and green (short) light.

The battery was half full when this happened, and since it doesn't use much energy while I'm not turning pages, I'm afraid it's going to take forever before the battery runs down.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Try a reset by removing the battery for maybe 2 minutes. Then put the battery back and see what happens.

Let it charge a few hours.
I have never seen a list of "LED Flash codes" for the PEz.

The good news is it is blinking.

Removing the battery for a few minutes should simulate a waiting to discharge you were mentioning.

Wow, you guys are great - fast answers! :-)

Before I read the answers, I removed the SD card again and erased it with Disk Utility on my Mac. I then put it back and and plugged the unit in with the wall charger. The reformatted card showed up, and I was able to shut it down.

I assume I now can put my books back on. Maybe the problem book will even open this time...

Dear Annk:

Yes, you were receiving help from two of the best. J.S. Wolf is very, very bright and my friend, "Duckey", loves to help and really knows his stuff.

Always, always recharge when the Battery Charge Life Meter gets down to just a little below half. Recharge about 8 hours or so. Even when the green light comes on... keep charging.

My first trip with my Astak 6 inch freaked me. It was the first day I had the device, got on a plane, and it started acting sluggish and required a few resets. I was SO concerned. Turns out that the Battery Charge Life is only a guide and when the charge gets too low the device gets crankey. You do NOT want to drain the battery. Old batteries use to need a complete drain and then recharge. The battery in your Pocket PRO does not need or want this. You will be a lot happier when you recharge when it shows just below half.

Ah, this is interesting, thanks. I had no idea. The battery indicator has four bars, and it had been on two bars for quite some time. So that explains it! I was actually getting worried that the device was getting buggy, but now the mystery's solved.

I've been very happy with the PP in general. I like the fact that it's so easy to have with me everywhere, the battery time is good, and I can read it in sunlight. I read on my iPod Touch as well (and I'd get an iPad if I had the ready cash), but I'm convinced I'll end up reading most on my PP regardless.

Is there any hope that a future firmware update will let this device communicate well with the Mac OS? As of now, I remove the SD card and plug that in directly to add and delete from my library. It works fine, but I'd like to be able to charge my PP via the computer without worrying about things getting corrupted, problems showing up/ejecting etc.

Dear annk:

Yes, I try very hard to warn everybody when they first sign in. We ARE changing the User Manual to get rid of the manufacturer's writing on battery charging and correct bad info.

Think of your Battery Life Charge Meter as the gasoline tank meter on your car. Most of them can show "full" and then take another two gallons or more. The gauge on the Pocket PRO is like that. The green light comes on and people think "it is full" but in actuality it can use another two hours of charging.

Yes, we are moving to correct the MAC lack of knowledge. We have purchased new MAC OS notebooks that tech support can use. Tech support can then find problems like you mention and get the factory to fix it via firmware upgrade.

Thank you for posting and helping everyone by bringing up problems.

I am on fourth charge now as the third charge didn't last as long even though I charged it over 12 hours each time.

I can only think it's the SD card as it fills up more it drains faster.
I charged mine for first time last night when it reached two bars because it did reach 2 bars so quickly. The only thing changed was I keep piling books into the SD Card and I'm using a new font that is perfect for my eyes.
I never leave the reader on when not in use. It sits on it own shelf in a safe place. I don't know why my last charge lasted only half as long as the first two but I took Robert's advice and went ahead charge it so I'm not in a good part of my book when the battery dies.
