Hello from a new Kindle Owner

Hello, my name is Greg; my Kindle 2 just arrived in the mail today. I have been using the Kindle Reader software on the iPhone for a while, but recently decided that the Kindle device would be useful to me. (My eyes get tired after reading on the iPhone for a while.) I think I will use the Kindle 2 for extended reading, but I'll still use the iPhone for times when I'm stuck somewhere without the Kindle.

I'm looking forward to learning more about the Kindle and eBooks in these forums. Thanks to all of you who share your experiences and wisdom here.

Hi Greg and welcome to MobileRead. Like you, I read on both my eBook reader and my iPhone. In fact, when you buy books for the Sony from Kobo, they automatically download to your iPhone at no extra cost

Hello Greg and welcome to MR.

Check out the Kindle forum for more info on your reader.

And look into the MR library - you might find a book you always wanted to read amongst the classics, lovingly formatted by MR members.

Hi Greg,

I'm new here as well and just got my new Kindle a couple of weeks ago. I used the Kindle software on my iPhone before I got my Kindle too. I would like to hear your thoughts and first impressions on the Kindle. I am very happy with mine, and I'm having a great time finding books to add, as well as trying to learn all the tips and hints to get the most out of my Kindle. Looking forward to hearing more about your new Kindle, nice to meet you!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm really enjoying the Kindle. I'm continuing to read one long book (John Adams by David McCullough) that I had started on the iPhone. I've been happy to find some classics on the Amazon store that are $0.99 to $2.99. It was a little confusing at first because there were several versions of some of them. I made the mistake of buying the cheapest version of one book to find it was a poor conversion with no table of contents. Then I realized I should make use of the free sample to see which version is the best.

I tried using Calibre to put some news feeds on the Kindle, but I'm finding that awkward to manage. I'm now trying the 14 day trial of the Wall Street Journal, Asimov's SF Magazine, and I just added a few blogs. Now I just need more time to read all of this stuff! I ordered an M-Edge case that arrived yesterday, so now I can carry the Kindle with me everywhere.

Cassidym, that's good to hear that you can also do simultaneous reading on the Sony. I came very close to getting the Sony Pocket Edition; it looks like a very nice machine.

Thanks for the links, Katti's Cat. I work with a Kati (only one "t") who is a cat lover. Maybe you are one of her cats who decided to correct the spelling of her name. Just peeking at them I see that there is a lot I want to read there. I have already tried using Mobipocket Creator to convert a long MS Word document, and created a usable table of contents. (I hate the crazy HTML markup in Word documents!) I'm sure I could do a better job after reading some of these posts. I also downloaded Sigil, which I like better. It appears to me that EPUB and MOBI are close enough that conversions should work well.
