Who wants to join me in quitting smoking?

After the most recent tax increase on cigarettes, I have decided I don't want to afford it anymore.

I smoke 50 cigarettes per day and have smoked for 45 years. I'm going cold turkey on Wednesday.

I'm scared! and I don't understand that. What could I possibly be scared of.

My daughter and her partner are joining me, and I would love for any of you smokers here to join me, too.

I have been waiting to 'be ready', but realised I never will be - if I don't just do it, I'll keep making excuses as to why I shouldn't quit now.

So... this is it! I have told the world (I initially wasn't going to tell anyone)..

Join me!

Well. I don't smoke, but I'll be your moral support.
Just one question...
Why on Wednesday? Why not now? Throw away all your cigs now and start saving those monies now (wow, Merriam-Webster says that actually is a word).

Good luck

Good luck! I"m a non-smoker, so I can't quit with you, but just think of all that money you can give another purpose to!

4 1/2 months smoke-free after 20 years...
The first week is the actual nicotine withdrawal; the rest is behavioral. I don't know which is harder to deal with, but I discovered that once the nicotine is out of your system, it really is all in your head.

Short-term craving trick: Glass of water, as cold as you can stand it. Kills that monkey deader than dirt.

Good luck!

You are very brave and I wish you all the luck, fortitude, strength and snacks in the world.

I wish I was brave enough to join you, but I'm in the middle of writing up my Master's thesis (and when I've finished that I will quickly find another reason why this is not the right time for me to stop).

You sound very determined - and remember, relapse is a natural part of change.

Excellent, Lene! Do it! We have Verencat, kindlekitten, and Moejoe (now Dusty Bottoms) that have recently quit. There are others here, but I seem to have forgetten who just now. I quit decades ago but am watching my father, who smoked for 50 years, about to die with ephesyma. Do it! QUIT! And let us know how you're doing it and about your progress, please.

Since you have an iPod Touch, there is a really good app available to help you stop smoking.

Good luck Lene!! It sucks and is really hard to do, but as a lot of people here have shown it can be done. It does get easier too, it's been 7 years for me and I rarely think of one anymore

Quit last year and I'd been smoking for around 20 years. First three days are horrible, but believe me it gets better after that. Think of your cravings as nothing more than hunger pangs that can be safely ignored. Get some lollipops. And every time you think of having a smoke.. picture that cigarette as a rolled up fifty thousand pound note that you're burning. (P.S. I was chain smoking near enough a hundred rolled cigarettes a day before I quit, so it's completely manageable. My father quit when he was sixty after smoking for fifty years too. He's been smoke free for near enough ten years now.)

because Mondays can be kind of sucky and stressful?

one of my crutches was actually drinking water to work through cravings. I also soaked a bunch of toothpicks in cinnamon oil to chew on. (I can rarely find them for purchase anymore) the actual chewing in the toothpick seemed to be cathartic. it is partially an oral habit after all!

Tell me about it... I just came back home from a 12 hour working day.

Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll just go to bed in hope that when I wake up all Mondays will be magically erased from calendars.
Good night everybody.

Good luck Lene - I will give you moral support. Just think of all the books you can buy once you have suceeded.

I would love to join you (for the same reason as you) but I haven't convinced MOTH yet. Once that is done, I will. Even tried to get him to smoke outdoors only but he isn't there yet.

Fingers crossed - let us know how you go. I know you can do it.

Good Luck Lene. I have been smoke free for 3 1/2 years now. The first 6 months were the hardest. I used Nicorette gum, and thought about all the things I could have with the money. Like lovely red wine with my dinner.

I do remember getting my sense of smell back after about 4 days. You will love walking past bakeries and coffee shops hmmmmmmmmmm
