Hello
I am new to your forum. I decided to join because I am thinking of purchasing a Sony reader but I have certain questions/reservations. First of all I have purchased several ebooks (mostly from Barnes and Noble and Amazon's Kindle) and already and downloaded them onto my laptop, but I'd like the portability of having them on a single smaller device. From reading some of your postings I have come to find out that conversion is a problem. Now, I am not one to endorse illegal activities, but if I have already legally purchased an ebook, it seems silly to me to pay for it again just because the file type is not supported by my current portable device. Any thoughts?

Hello ncescamilla, and welcome to Mobileread.
The issue you raise are well known to people here as you can imagine. DRM stripping and format shifting are often discussed on the forum under various threads and, whilst opinion is divided, my guess would be that most people think that, so long as the files don't get distributed to others, these are legitimate activities if you have got the files legitimately - which you obviously have if you bought them from B&N. |

Hello and welcome. Glad you found someone to steer you in the right direction. It's one of the reasons I keep putting off getting an e-reader. So many choices, so many decisions. What to do?

Hi ncescamilla and welcome to MR. Wow, first post and you touch on a subject that is hotly debated here. Well, everyone has to make up their own mind is all I say to it.
You will find heaps of help here so you should be fine with any reader you decide on at the end. |

Good to have your company, Ncescamilla. I think you'll find as you look around the forums that reading devices are more flexible than many folks believe. DRM can be stripped pretty simply without needing to feel guilty about it, and there's some pretty neat format conversion software freely available (Calibre, for instance, was developed by a member here and many of us swear by it). Good luck. Neil

Thanks to all who welcomed me. I welcome any feedback and would like to do more research before I invest in any device. I have read several posts regarding the removal of DRM stripping. I've done some looking for a DRM removal download but mostly they are for .wma (audio) files. (I have yet to find one that mentions ebooks.) Would these work for ebooks as well or would I have to find one that is specifically for Kindle books and B&N ebooks? Also, someone mentioned the Calibre program which I have already downloaded on my laptop, is that all I need to convert my ebooks or do I still have to find that DRM crack?
