I just purchased my nook on Monday (87 hours ago). I am finding it to be a wonderful e-reader (my first) and very easy to read books on. I have read over 1000 pages so far (3 books) with no issues and find side-loading books on it trivial from calibre. I have purchased a few books from B&N and find myself trying to resist the temptation to get my entire library duplicated in ebook format.
I don't understand why the nook isn't more popular on this forum though I suppose that is because of the early SW issues. The nook is more open and supports more formats and stores than the kindle. The wifi is much superior to using 3G all the time and the incredibly simple way the USB to pc connection works is wonderful. Any thoughts? -Duncan |

I agree. It's a great E-reader. So yeah it's my first and I dont have much experience..and my nook is kinda defective (E-ink is defective - burned fonts and white vertical line in the middle of the screen) but hell the week I had with it before it went fubar was very fun and Its just nice to read in it. its so crisp, had to remind my self its not a real book lol.
Cant wait till I get my replacement and then...bye bye normal books. |

I just bought my second after the first one died (well, honestly, it was manslaughter... I dropped it). I bought a Sony in revenge. I took it right back. I love my nook!
Yeah, it isn't perfect, but it is very good. We are seeing regular firmware updates. Yes it does poorly for annotation. but I never write in my books, and don't need to take notes (I still use my computer for technical reading). Forums like this often make a product look worse than it is. That's because people post their problems! But I'll chime in: It's a great reader, and keeps on getting better. P.S. I got the warranty that covers Acts of God. I have a one year old, and she is divine.... (very very bad pun. sorry.) |

Thanks for the replies. I am glad others enjoy their nooks as well. It is a great device, especially for a user like myself who runs both linux and winxp. I am very happy my linux boxes happily connect and manage my nook sideloaded content easily.
I plan on softrooting my nook later today, now that I have loaded 35 books or so I think I want to see what the nookdevs SW looks like on it. |

Good to have your company, Duncan. Some Nook reviews I've read here have been real raves. Glad to hear you're happy with yours. Best wishes. Neil

I love my Nook too. I had a Sony PRS 505; I sold it to a friend because it only has 3 font sizes, and no dictionary. I recieved a Sony PRS 600 for Christmas and I loved the dictionary, and 5 font sizes. Every once and a while I downloaded a book with really tiny font and the large font was still a little to small. The touch screen started to show a few scratches from swiping it, so I decided to by the Nook. It has a great screen, page turnes are fast, and it is actually easier to just push a button than swipe the screen.

Welcome aboard. I also wonder why there aren't more nook owners on here.

Loving Nook Also....
I think that the "average" Nook owner is not the posting type - more the book reading type. And the Nook is ideal for just reading books. As for me, I love to tinker, and particularly with Android.
Having said that, I initially softrooted 1.3 but it seemed very buggy - my WiFi kept skipping in and out (has been rock solid before softroot and I ultimately went back to unrooted and WiFi is again rock solid. I didn't see a lot of advantage and except for Trook, I like my Nook "as-is" and I hope B&N keeps improving updates - having had several Sony's, an Aztak Pocket Pro and an Archos A5IT I believe the Nook is the best of the lot! And this board is tops also. |

I love my Nook too. I had a Sony PRS-505 before the Nook, and loved it, but I prefer the Nook in almost every way.

Ok.. I own a Kindle2, PRS-600 and now a Nook since Monday.
At the moment, the Nook is my favorite, if only because it displays PDF files better than the other two, though I find the fonts very crisp and easy to read for these 60+ year old eyes. I'll probably get rid of the 600 (the touch screen makes screen contrast a loser for me) and keep the other two. In the end I like them both. |

I am very fond of my Nook. It is my third reader and has becomemy favorite. Don't know why more Nook people don't declare themselves. I'm all for starting a Nook users anonymous.

My nook is about 3 weeks old now and other than my dissatisfaction with the file management in My Library, I love it. I recently finished my first library book on the nook and will be using that feature quite a bit!

I just got a nook about three days ago (I have had a Kindle 1 for about a year and a half) and I love it! Once I got the finger swipe page turn thing down, I was in love, it's far superior to buttons (on either the nook or any version of the Kindle).
I am also really excited about the possibilities of Android and being able to modify and add simple apps to the nook (just viewed the demo's of nooklets and they look great). Definitely love my nook. |

Throw me into the Love My Nook ring as well.
If anyone was turned off by the nook due to it's first reviews or it's first software, you really may want to reconsider looking at this e-reader again. After the three software updates, the latest being the v1.3, this is really starting to live up it's potential. And the latest rounds of reviews from Cnet etc, ones who are re reviewing it are also reflecting this though as well If my Nook needed a lung transplant, I would donate mine. ![]() |

I have a Nook and am mostly satisfied with it. More books are becoming available in the 3 months since it arrived at my doorstep, and I can buy from several providers, not just B&N.
There are still a few bugs I'd like to see worked out, both by B&N and the publishers. One important feature to me is the ability to increase the typesize. My 65+ eyes have retinal issues and looking at fine print is very tiresome. Recently, I bought several books for which the fontsize looks small, even in the "Very Large" mode. I compared them with other books on my Nook and found the typesize on the screen was smaller by half. There seems to be a lot of variability in this feature from book to book. I'd like to see publishers agree on some industry standards. Also, the ebooks should be tested in the various readers. "Very Large" fontsize should not appear "Kinda Small" If a book is not DRM protected, I can import it into Sigil and change the fontsize. Are there any fixes when the book is DRM protected?
