Deselect item in browser

How do I deselect an item in the browser? If I have it filtered to a subset and then select all, I can not then deselect any item without clicking on the item number, which opens the viewer. Is there an easier way to deselect? I keep thinking it should act like most file explorers; it deselects the previous selections if you click on a single item.

press ctrl and click

If you click on the search text box it deselects the current selection.

also holding shift/ctrl keys and clicking a selected item will affect the selection.
