Car charger for Jetbook/Libre
I do a lot of traveling in my RV and often camp in places that have no electricity. Could a mini-USB 12 volt car charger designed for cell phones be used safely to charge a Jetbook or Libre? Are all of these the same or are there certain specs I need to be aware of? I know I could use an inverter but I think a 12 volt plug in charger would be less likely to run down my RV's battery.

They are all the same
you can just grab one off of e-bay for a couple bucks (if you don't already have one).

Ectaco sells one for 12.95 + shipping here. If you use a regular USB power adapter it may not charge as quickly, as the supplied adapter puts out more power than a standard USB port/charger. Just look at the amperage output on the regular charge cable, and try to find one that puts out the same amount(I don't have mine with me at work, or I'd check it myself).

Is there anyone out there who is good with electrical circuits who can confirm that using a power inverter would draw more power than using a 120-volt mini-usb charger? I have a power inverter also which I bought hoping to charge a number of devices such as cellphones, mp3 players etc. Seems more versatile than buying a 12 volt adapter for each device but just wondering now too if it would drain the car battery faster.

The A/C charger that came with my Libre shows output of 5 volts and 1000 milli amps (1 amp). Using Google I have determined that it doesn't matter whether the output amperage of the charger is greater than what the device needs as the device "pulls" as many amps as it needs. However, amperage outputs lower than needed by the device will extend its charging time. I haven't been able to find the voltage and amperage specifications on any of these chargers by searching on the net. The two mini USB car chargers I have for other devices do not have any specifications printed on them. I'll have to go to a retailer and see if the electrical specifications are printed on the packages for these chargers. |

This looks like it may work, use your double-header cable, and it will supply the correct voltage to charge just like plugging it into a PC... And it's only 11 bucks shipped to boot...
Another one... Last edited by heffe2001; 04-07-2010 at 10:46 AM. |
