US Kindle Store outside US

So I've been using a Kindle DXi for a while from Australia. Love the device but the Australian Kindle store is too restrictive in terms of the catalog. More and more books I look up are in the US store but not the AU one.

A while ago I read a method here on MR for signing up for an alternate Amazon account with access to the US Kindle store (from outside the US). Can't seem to find the information anymore.

Does it still work and anyone still have that link around?

Cheers!

No need to use a second account. You can just change your address in the "Your Country" field on the "Manage Your Kindle" page. This is separate to your billing address so you can still pay for books with your Australian credit card.

Awesome, thanks. That seems to have worked and the books I was after are now '1-clickable'.

I assume we get hit by the international wireless delivery surcharge on top of the book cost anyway?

Not if you download to your computer and transfer via USB. Also, samples remain free.

Btw, occasionally Amazon might take the liberty of changing your country back to Australia so it is a good idea to check the Manage Your Kindle page once in a while.

Interesting - I actually just bought a book and didn't get hit by a surcharge despite the wireless delivery.

Amazon also sent a "note" through to the kindle about international charges after I changed the region to the US. It said subscriptions have a $4.99 per week fee, and whispersync documents are charged at $0.99 "per MB" ... however... book delivery and 'one off periodicals' will be free of any international delivery charges.

Which totally rocks!

About the whispernet fee for US people (which is what people who have a US address are) downloading internationally (aka Australia) - I read on Amazon forum that they are no longer charging this fee. Which explains your free delivery dweller. Sweet!

Aha, for whatever reason, I thought you had to have a valid us address added to buy books from US.

You do. I am currently using a freight forwarder's address which I use for physical US only goods from time to time.

However, I have heard of people using totally random addresses using:

I have heard people using the White House (street address) and Disneyland. I have a freight address too. Barnes and Noble wont accept it though.

B&N checks your IP. You need to have VPN, then it's working. (There's even a VPN solution for nook, to directly purchase on the reader.)

Nope, I am using 'alwaysvpn' which shows I am buying from NYC. It doesnt like my credit card, even though I used it to buy a gift card last week, and I am using the gift card to buy the book. The money for the book has been debited from the gift card, but when I try to download, it says I need to verify the credit card! I am going round in circles.
