CorePlayer (the new TCMP) to be available Oct 16, 2006

The newest version of CorePlayer is scheduled for an Oct 16, 2006 release according to the web page.

CorePlayer is expected to eventually run on platforms such as PalmOS, Windows Mobile, various flavors of Windows, and more. It will include major enhancements to the existing TCMP software that is already extremely popular, and at some point should include streaming media support, skins, playlists, and a number of other improvements.

When this software was made available orginally for Palm, I remember Ed Colligan even referring to it's availability, but without naming the software probably to avoid offending Palm's software partners.

This release is also expected to have a commercial version that includes additional codec support, and probably a more limited free version will still be made available. Based on an old interview with one of the team members, they want very much to avoid making this an expensive piece of software, so I wouldn't expect it to be a $40 item, even if it might sell at that price point.

Some more info from PDA247 which points us to the CoreCodec forums.

By the way, a little bit of poking around tells us that according to CoreCodec's BetaBoy, who also made the announcement, "We are planning for 3PM EST."

Cute message at the web page now about a holding pattern. Apparently they are waiting on Handango. Release was due 2.5hrs ago. Still waiting, but it's worth the wait!

Here's an explanation of what's going on.
http://www.corecodec.com/forum/index.php?topic=3224.0

They may opt to wait for TuesdayThursday and go with whatever they already planned for tomorrowthat day.

(Thanks Harpgliss for catching that error!)

Hi,

Well the current post by BeteaBoy reads.

"Well.... we have to apologize as we did not anticipate Handango taking so long... we might just opt for something we were going to bring up on Thursday."

So it may be a few more days wait for the anxious.

They really put themselves in a pickle by giving a day and time for the release because a lot of people expected the release at exactly 3:00 p.m. E.S.T. and not a second later.

I quess it will come out when it is time.

It's not the first time this happens... everyone who has been anticipating some kind of CorePlayer release over the past months should know better.

Here is something that makes me less excited about the release:

Quote:
Q: Does CorePlayer need to be connected to register/download the player?
A: Yes, as each compiled installer is specific for each user is will work ONLY against the hardware it is to be installed with the specific Core Account.

Q: Will you offer an 'offline' way to register CorePlayer?
A: Yes, we will provide details later

Q: What happens if my device online I register it and then I take it offline?
A: After xx days that it has not 'touched' our server and received a custom 'byte' made for you. it will revert back to CorePlayer FREE till you come online.

.
.
.

A: After a random period of time the player will prompt you to login to your Core Accout and download a 'seed' to keep the player active. This can be loaded via SD/MMC or the installer for the PC, etc. It will give you plenty of time to do this... so dont think a few days... but I will not elaborate on specifics.

Otherwise once you are connected.... the player does a 'touch' update automatically and the seed is generated/updated without any interaction by the user.
That's the worst I've ever heard. Not only do they require you to get online for registering your copy of CorePlayer, but they also require you to regularly visit their server otherwise your copy would rever back to the freeware version of CorePlayer.

Is that legal?
