Slow response on 4 book collection
![]() Hi. I recently downloaded a 4 book collection from the SONY eBook store (about 1,400 pages long). No issues downloading and no issue uploading to the reader. But the book itself takes forever to open up on the reader. Eventually it does open and after moving very slowly through the first few pages it finally catches up and moves from page to page like normal. But then as I head into the next chapter the whole reader shuts down and heads back to start up mode, which puts me back on the library screen. I head back to the book and it tells me I can continue reading with page 1. My bookmarks do get saved, but it would be nice if it didn't shut down on me. Since I haven't had any issues previsouly, I assume this has to be happening because of the size of the file. So my question is - How can I avoid this? Is there a way that I can break up my 1,400 page file into the 4 individual books? And its obviously its DRM protected. |

Sorry, I can't help you at all. I do not use the Sony software or buy books from the Sony store...but.. I don't understand why they would put 4 books in one file. .....
I will say large files are slow, these readers do not exactly have cutting edge processors on them, and eInk is very slow to refresh the screen. I do have large files, and they are slow, but I have never had the "re-boot" issue you have... Hope someone can help you soon. |

1400 pages? What's the filesize of this thing?
I'm guessing your problem is the size, and maybe the inner structure of the epub is not optimal either... To edit it in any way you would obviously have to remove the DRM first. But I don't know if there is any easy/automatic way to break it up, even then. Welcome to MR, by the way ![]() |

This is just an untested idea, but I wonder if the reader would respond differently if the file was on a meory card, or if on a memory card already, then on the internal memory.
I know my 505 will crash on large files (like a dictionary). Maybe the file was not assembled correctly and a call to Sony would be in order since the sold the file for use on their hardware? |

If the ebooks are offered individually, maybe Sony would be willing to provide to you in that way.

Just to pick up the memory card thing:
Read and write speeds of the memory cards make a difference, allthough not too much. There's a huge difference between memory card and internal reader memory. I tried this once with a pdf and page load times were reduced by 50%. Initially, with the file on the card, a page turn was about 7 secs. On internal memory it was down to 3.5 secs. As long as my files fit on the readers memory, I go with that. ![]() |

Memory card are a non-issue for the OP, since they are using the PRS-300....

Thanks for chiming in everybody. Didn't expect responses so quick.
Yes, PRS-300 does not take a memory card. I can try to contact SONY support. I was just hoping I could split into 4 files. I guess this is what I get for trying to save money buying a collection, right? Haha. |

SONY support said there is no way it is an issue with the file size, and recommended that I delete and re-download the file. Great, thanks SONY. Like that wasn't the first thing I tried.

It seems it's the first thing they recommend, whatever the problem
![]() Even if it makes no sense at all... Well, you can always see it as an opportunity to learn about removing drm and converting to other formats you can easily edit and then reconverting to epub... Wouldn't sony be happy that they drive people to such things, just because they don't want to test their books on their devices... |

I agree to the post above. If they don't mind the paying customer, I wouldn't mind their drm.

Well I tried to re-download the file. It seemed slightly quicker at loading and moving page to page this time. But here I am again crashing when I move to a new chapter.
If I did look into removing the DRM, what program could I use to break us the file? I did't think Calibre could do that. |
