Hiya!
Hello all,
My name is Cai and I am a Canadian living in Iowa (just finished school and currently doing a combination research/teaching/parenting) I cracked an bought a Sony PRS-505 to solve my dilemma (want an ebook reader but needed to justify it economically). Luckily the university bookstore is no longer carrying them and sold me the last one for a song. Now that I have one of these babies I realize I should have bought one long ago and justified it as a research expense (if the machine is a bit out of date then a historian of science/technology/medicine needs one, right?). Now the big concern is keeping my husband from carrying it off in a fit of book-reading lust. I am amazed by the contributions people have posted, and already feeling guilty that I have not brought anything to share (but I will soon). Keep up the good work! Cai (pronounced K-eye) |

Hi Cai & welcome to MR. Grats on your reader. And it's better late than never. But why resist your husband to carry it off? Wouldn't that justify another purchase :-)
If you have any questions regarding the reader, check out the subforum for the Sony. Lots of questions have been answered. If yours isn't among them or you can't find it, just ask. Plenty of helpful folks around here as you have already discovered. Also check out the eBook library from MR. Sooooo many free books, lovingly formatted by MR members. That'll keep you reading for a while. A lot of people don't like the software coming with the Sony. Here is a good alternative: Calibre. Very easy to use and it allows you to organise your books exactly the way you want. And don't forget to look into the Lounge if you want some fun. I am sure you will contribute more to the forum (your introduction was the first step). |

Hello Cai and welcome to MobileRead. I bought my PRS-505 nearly two years ago and i still like it a lot - even if it's a bit outdated.

Hello there, Cai. Good to have your company. You've joined us at a good time because it's the middle of Read an Ebook Week and there are several offers of free and generously discounted ebooks around the site posted by MobileRead members.
If you follow the link in my signature line below, for instance, you'll find twenty-five novels offered on a pay-what-you-like (or nothing at all) basis. My own wee publishing house was Europe-based for its first eight years, by the way, but only last month we became officially registered in your home country, Canada, where our technical director and my associate editor live. We have quite a few Canadian authors, too. Happy reading. Neil |

Thanks for all the hellos,
I did solve the husband snitching the reader problem. Convinced the university to sell me their demo model. He is just signing on to the forum as The_Geek. We are still working out some problems with Sony's eBooks site recognizing his machine (this appears occasionally in existing threads as mystery error 2027). We've gotten it to the stage where I can download public domain offerings, but cannot authorize it to download books I purchased. If they give me an easy answer I will post it. Thanks for all your suggestions. Cai |
