Miscellaneous questions ?

hello all

i have some questions concerning the irex iliad :

1- how much time will it take to load a 10-15 pages pdf file i have created using cute pdf tool .

2- how much time will it take to change the pdf page (using the 2.6 fw )

3- when i went to the iliad homepage it says that it will take 4 to 6 weeks for the shipping ?! anyone knows a faster a way to get it ?

4- i am a bit confused which reader to get the iliad or sony and since both of them accept pdf and txt files the most important issue for me now is page changing speed ( the iliad is much slower but i noticed a huge improvement in the last fw upgrade ) so which one is faster and more comportable in terms of file loading and page changing speed ?

thanks .

1 - it's bearable. 45s to boot and 13s to open a 700 pages, ~2MB (text-only) pdf.

2 - you can flip the page roughly 10 times in 30 seconds, but i think changing the page itself takes a little bit less then 2 seconds. I'm not sure if prerendering works properly when switching the whole time. It doesn't feel long, anyway.

I don't have a 10-15 page PDF to play with, but it takes maybe 10-15 seconds to load a 300 page PDF. So your 10-15 page PDF should go very fast.

Now that they've implemented page caching, it takes as long as a screen refresh. Figure the length of time it takes a person to flip a paper page.

Nope. Unless someone who already has one wants to sell theirs.

Unknown since people don't have a Sony in their hands to test.

As far as compatibility goes, going by their past record, Sony is a poor choice.

Page changing speed is now limited by how fast eInk can change, which will be constant across all eInk devices.

thankyou guys for your fast response i have some more questions ,

1- if i keep the irex iliad switched on all the time without using it will it consume power .

2- can i drag and drop all the .txt and .pdf files i've downloaded and created to the iliad and play it directly or do i have to convert it first ?

3- what about (drm ) are there any files i can't play and how is that compared to sony reader .

1 - yes, it will. Standby isn't implemented (yet?), so the cpu draws power the whole time. Around 8.5 hours are possible.

2 - yes, it shows up as mass storage device where you drop your files. txt isn't the best choice until now, line wrap doesn't work. making an html should work fine, though.

3 - until now there's no drm implemented. That means you can't read most of the commercially available books (unless you convert them, which might be illegal, depending on the attitude of your country to fair use). iRex seems to be in talks with content providers, but you shoudn't count on it. (I don't mind, baen and gutenberg offer more then enough content until this issue is settled or i buy a new reader in 3 years - with rollable color eink display)

3 Fictionwise 'multiformat' books also work (download .pdf). Authors are more current than Project Gutenberg. Typically not the ones you will find in the top ten of the NYT list, but some good stuff there. I've read several and the ones I've read format fine (there is one I'm reading now that has more margin and a smaller font than I would prefer, but it works).
