Iliad "bubble"

Sorry i've been missing, but my "bosses" went on vacation and left me taking care of things for the last few weeks -_-''

Anyway, i have some bad news news...

I usually take my Iliad with me everywhere, usually inside a case with all the papers and other stuff i need at work.

The problem was that i forgot that case at (family) home, and it stayed there until i returned for it the next weekend.

So i just boot up the Iliad and notice a shadow on the screen. After examining it i see that the screen "unglued" from the glass, and now i have a 3x5mm bubble bellow the glass.

Screen works fine, and the bubble is hardly noticeable (except in direct sunlight).

After i talked with Alex i found out that the culprit was my ipod nano that spent a whole week applying pressure to that spot

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know before i get stuck at work and forget.

I was planning on posting pictures, but my brother toke my card reader, so it will have to wait -_-'

Ps: I'm still going to finish my how to of converting pdfs in Indesign, probably next week only though :|

Anyone could help me determine the date of the stories in Honor Harrington Anthologies. I'm trying to convert all the stories in separate files, and ordering them by chronological order.

Obviously i'll offer the pdf's and Indesign files for anyone who wants them.

Tomorrow i'll post the stories i don't have a date yet. Forgot to bring the cd i have all the files with me -_-'

So it sounds like a neoprene case may not be sufficient to protect the screen. Glad I decided to switch over to leather for just that reason - I thought it would be better protection. Thanks for the heads up.

Oh dear...that's exactly the kind of trouble you (iRex) get if you make a reading device that people are supposed to take along everywhere and don't supply any Screen protection...
btw...does anyone have an idea how I could get my hands on a BRANDO screen protector fo the Iliad? Does anyone know where/how I can reach the company directly? It wouldn't help againt this kind of damage, but a scratched screen is always bad news...

It sounds like the offending Apple Device (NanoPod) was actually inside the case with the poor defenseless iLiad, so the case construction probably wasn't really a factor.

Clearly a case of industrial sabotage.

@CommanderROR: I'm assuming you've already tried the BRANDO site?

@HenryCat: Please post the full Honor-Thology list when you get it, I think I'd like to do the same thing you're doing.

you could simply drop a snakebite server somewhere.

http://actlab.tv/snakebite.html

Gives you a complete bittorent server plus a website with the files. Just drop a file in the folder and it's automatically listed, a torrent created and seeded.

I only tried it once, but it seemed quite promising if you want to distribute any kind of media files.

HenryCat,

I don't think I can give you actual dates but I can place a couple in the continuum.

I'll post the list over at the BAEN Bar and see if the uber-fans over there can clarify.

EDIT: One of the Baen Barflys pointed out to me that the dates are off for A Beautiful Friendship & The Stray -- I think they're only about 15 T-months apart, and the date for Friendship should definitely be before Stray.

- LET'S GO TO PRAGUE

1477 - (OS) A Beautiful Friendship
1472 - (OS) The Stray
1652 - (OS) What Price Dreams?
1880 - (OS) Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington
1883 - (OS) Queen's Gambit
1890 - (OS) The Hard Way Home
- Promised Land
1900 - (HH) On Basilisk Station
- With One Stone
1903 - (HH) The Honor of the Queen
- A Ship Named Francis (or maybe after SVW)
1905 - (HH) The Short Victorious War
1906 - (HH) Field of Dishonor
1907 - (HH) Flag in Exile
1908 - (HH) Honor Among Enemies

Could anyone in the know explain to me what those books (i presume) are?
And the numbers (years?) and the OS and HH and SI are?

A while ago i downloaded the 10 baen Cd's, if you need any of them Henrycat just let me know;

About the hosting, i recently found a decent free hosting company www.Free-Hoster.cc
that offers 500 MB, no file size limit and unlimited data transfer.

HH is the 'main' Honor Harrington series (by David Weber) -- excellent MilSciFi, IMO.

The numbers are indeed years, and are measured Post Diaspora (The Diaspora officially began in 2103 A.D. -- that's Anno Domini , just to be thorough )

WOS, OS, & SI refer to the 'other' books in the same universe (The Honorverse), that don't have the "main" character of Honor Harrington in them, or only in passing). I'm not sure what they actually stand for in HenryCat's list, but I recognize which sets of books HenryCat's referring to.

I think SI is Saganami Island (the name of the island where the Naval Academy is located in these books). OS may be 'other stories,' as they're from the anthologies of short stories that are kinda tangental and contributive to the "main" plot line, but I could be wrong there. I don't know what WOS is intended to mean. That book is a spin-off, that I think is intended to be the start of a new sub-series, as The Shadow of Saganami also means to be.

Answer from the Baen Bar

Hey, HenryCat, one of the folks over at Baen's Bar forum responded, here's what they said:

Quote:
I have no fix dates, but imho we have to put

- Promised land between The Hard way home and On Basilisk station (about 1896?)
- With one stone between On Basilisk Station and Honor of the Queen (about 1901/1902?)
- A Ship named Francis between Honor of the Queen and Field of Dishonor (maybe parallel to Field of Dishonor, 1906) and finally
- Let's go to Prague parallel to the last three or four months of Echoes of Honor (1912/13) This book (Echoes )covers about 2 years - Caslett said something about the time to Honor in preparation of the Battle of Charon.

From the highlands is earlier. It is short after the end of Echoes of Honor.

Fanatic - parallel to Operation Buttercop (Ashes of Victory) (it starts some months before Nightfall)

The service of the Sword: Abigail was in her 1st Saganami Year during Ashes of Victory, and the Academy-Time was compressed to 3 years, iirc - so the year for the begin of her snotty-cruise has to be 1915.

Crown of Slaves is one year after The service of the sword - 1916

The Duration of the High-Ridge-Government was about three, three and a half years, iirc - it ends about 1916 late/1917 early - and War of Honor covers the last year of this period.

Shadow of Saganami an At all costs are in the same time; but the year has to be earlier - 1917? 1918?
I don't know of anything to contradict their reasoning, but they obviously pay better attention to such details than I do. (as do you, for that matter)

Hope that helps!

EDIT: More date info from another BarFly
Quote:
FYI, interspersed below are specific dates from DW via Richard
Earnshaw on certain events.

>From the highlands is earlier. It is short after the end of Echoes of
>Honor.
>
>Fanatic - parallel to Operation Buttercop (Ashes of Victory) (it starts some
>months before Nightfall)
>
>The service of the Sword: Abigail was in her 1st Saganami Year during Ashes
>of Victory, and the Academy-Time was compressed to 3 years, iirc - so the
>year for the begin of her snotty-cruise has to be 1915.

DW has definitively stated Abigail Hearns graduated in 6/25/1918, and
began mid-cruise. Battle of Refuge is on 8/02/1918.

>Crown of Slaves is one year after The service of the sword - 1916

Crown of Slaves begins 6/01/1919 & Berry is crowned 10/26/1919.

>The Duration of the High-Ridge-Government was about three, three and a half
>years, iirc - it ends about 1916 late/1917 early - and War of Honor covers
>the last year of this period.

War of Honor begins 6/23/1918. HR govt lasted until mid Nov 1919,
shortly after 2nd Haven War started 11/10/1919.

>Shadow of Saganami an At all costs are in the same time; but the year has to
>be earlier - 1917? 1918?

Honor's Last View address is on 6/23/1920. Hexapuma transits to
Talbot Station on 7/19/1920, returns on 7/18/1920. EARC of AAC had
BoM 5 days after Hexapuma's return. Final draft/print version
modified that to at least a few weeks.
That's it, I'm not posting anything else from there unless David Weber himself weighs in (not impossible). They look like they could be settling in for a long run of it over there.
