DR1000s conversion of PDF to Template

Hi,

Just got my Irex DR1000s, seems to be one of the last available ones. Irex is heavily promoting their 800 series and has put DR1000 hold for now. Anyway.

I want to use my DR1000 to make notes. Mainly to do counts of products and so on which are present in a shop or location.

To do so I want to have a predefined template with columns that I can open up, fill in the details and save similar to the template that comes on the DR1000s as a standard.

If you go to the Irex website and look on the help section it seems to be very simple. Create the PDF you want, put it on the DR1000, select the PDF in companion and click the button "create template".

So far so good. Now I disconnect my DR1000s look in the meeting notes section and don't see a template but just a document that can be edited and save automatically with the data in it.

So contacted Irex Helpdesk where I got the information that the create template service in companion does not work on the DR1000 and that templates are not supported.
Return question is why is there a template on the DR1000 when you buy it. Apprarently it should be possible but they do not know how to get it done.

Anyone who knows how I could get this data in a template that remains the same and just saves into another file which can then be merged or converted with myscript.

Thanks.

If you are using Windows XP, make sure that your files in windows explorer show the file extension (i.e. .pdf, .html, etc). I had the same problem because the extensions are excluded by default in windows explorer but need to be turned on for the irex template builder to work. If you Google "toggle windows extensions" or something like that you should be able to find how to turn them on and off, I think I originally found the answer on one of Irex's forums.

Also for notes you might want to check out Xournal, its pretty cool. It crashed one too many times on me for it to be a reliable note app but you might have better luck. The default notes/scribbling on the DR looked really bad when it outputted for me so it dashed my dreams of note taking. Xournal's scribblings look 100x better than Irex's which is mind baffling to me and the actual program is way better as well, my only real problem was crashing but a lot of people like it. Its on this forum just do a search for it. You can output pdfs right on the DR with it, Irex should be taking notes its like they are asleep at the wheel over there.

Hi Junkyardwillie,

Thanks for this info. It now works fine. Surprising to see that the people at Irex weren't able to help with this. Good that there are people like yourself around to help out.

Thanks.

the companion software on the device, allows you to convert any pdf into a template. Connect your dr1000 to your computer, start the companion software in X:\System\PC-application\, select a pdf and press the "convert to template" button.
Actually, this only changes a setting in the metadata.db file in the folder of the pdf, in such a way that the device itself will recognize it as a template. When you start scribbling on the pdf, it will make a new pdf file: name0001.pdf or something like that.

This advise seems to be gone on the new support site, but the old one still has it.
