800S does have landscape as well. But it only can rotate once by 90°. Not the full 360° (90°, 180°, 270°).
180° would be great for left handed users (else the flipbar probably is on the "wrong side"). And I'd prefer 270° (-90°), to have the flipbar on the top instead of on the bottom (as you see on the pic).
And if you're in landscape, the flipbar is "less natural" of course. Pushing left or right reminds of actually turning pages in a paperbook. Pushing the flipbar up or down needs another holding position and seems a bit strange.

Just as with the 800S, there is landscape mode on the DR800SG, but no zoom.

well.. not exactly; on the 800s there is a landscape mode for PDF but the page is fully displayed inside the display, so the page is even more little than in normal mode (you could display even two pages I mean..); if on the DR800SG there is a real landscape mode for PDF that would be an important improvement.

let me know

Depending on the file structure, you should be able to crop margins (margins "0" in settings").
But it's no zoom of course (iRex 800 not having any zoom - yet?), but reflowing the text.

The effect you describe (...even more little...) you only have, if you stick to the original layout. And this makes sense of course. If the display has less height, of course the width has to be reduced accordingly.
As soon as you use any other size than "Original Layout", it works as you probably expect it.

mgmueller,

It's interesting how different amount of text is on screen depending on the orientation and font size and yet the page number count at the bottom stays the same. Can you explain how that works?

It's basically the same for ePUBs and PDFs.
In PDFs, it simply shows the original pagecount as defined by the original layout. This can mean, you have page 12 of the document on actual 2 or maybe even 3 pages.
This even makes kind of sense. The very idea of PDFs was, to "conserve" the document structure: Page 3 is from word a to word b.

mgmueller,

Would you please post pics of a pdf with two columns of text (like those in academic papers) in landscape mode, both with and without reflowing text? Does it conserve the formulas of a mathematical equation even when it loses its original format from reflowing, for example? Any chance to keep intact the format of result tables if these are formatted as images? Thanks in advance!!

In landscape mode (in original view rather than when selecting a larger font/reflowing), the DR800SG does not stretch a PDF document to fill the page (you have huge margins on the right and left and the page view itself is actually smaller than in portrait). You're much better off viewing it in portrait mode. I show this in my video review part 2 on MTR.

If you select a larger font, all images go away and you're left with text. Anything text-based is preserved.
