Just Bought a 900: First Look
I just picked up a Sony 900 from Best Buy in Atlanta about an hour ago.
After loading an ebook I had already purchased on it, I have to say I am a little disappointed at the contrast on the screen. I don't know if it's because I haven't charged the battery yet (it was plugged in as I was reading) but, looking at a book under the same light, I think the contrast leave a lot to be desired. Is there a contrast setting? ![]() ![]() I am taking it on a business trip this week and I'll bring it along for the flights. Right now, the contrast is the only thing that is bugging me. Otherwise, I am pretty impressed at the build quality. Though, it is Sony and they have always built quality products. I took a 14 day trial subscription to the NY Times. I will see how it is to have it delivered every morning. However, I doubt I'll keep it. With my schedule, I rarely find time to read the paper. I'm more a book person so the NY Times Book Review tomorrow should be interesting to read. It came with a nice charger which, since I hear the battery lasts so long, I will probably just leave at home and use it to charge on the weekends, if needed. I'll take the USB cable along with me. The reader also came with a very nice Case Logic hard shell case. I don't imagine I'll be heading to a war zone anytime soon but it's nice to know I'm covered. I will update this over the course of the week as I get to use it more. ![]() |

Congratulations! The contrast is due to the touchscreen. Having a portable light is a must. Try to grab one before you head off on your trip. Look in the forum for suggestions.

Well, to continue my review: One of the reasons I wanted a reader is my addition to RSS feeds. I downloaded two of my favorites this morning through Calibre and uploaded them to the 900. I have to say that the formatting and display are terrific and it's almost like reading my own custom magazine. I also flipped through the trial NY Times subscription. The Sunday edition was ready and waiting for me when I woke up this morning. I am impressed by the look and feel and I do not really miss the messiness of the paper itself. Also, I think it's really saving some trees. Finally, I am about to go on a business trip so I uploaded one of my PDFs I expect to be marking up on the plane. I was able to mark it up with the stylus. My question is whether or not it saved the markup and whether or not I will be able to save the marked up document to my notebook so I can print it or e-mail it to my colleague. So far, the only thing that it making me want to return the 900 is the screen. I will get a book light at the airport and see if it ameliorates the situation. If not, I will be back to researching something that meets my requirements. The 900 meets all of them so far, except for the screen. ![]() By the way, does anyone use the Reader Library app or do you only use Calibre. I am trying to figure out why I would use the Sony software. Last edited by lionel47; 02-07-2010 at 12:59 PM. Reason: Added Reader Library question. |

Welcome to the forum lionel47, and congrats on the reader. Be sure and check out all the free books here at mobileread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=126 that are ready to go for your Sony. You can also look a few forums down from that one and get many ePub books that will also work..... And here is a like to free ebooks from the Sony store http://ebooks.addall.com/sonyfree.html . Be sure to check back on the Sony link as the book content changes. Also Kobo http://www.kobobooks.com/ is a good place to buy books and often cheaper than Sony.
I do not use the Sony software myself, only use Calibre... Again, congrats and have fun! __________________ |
