ipad vs DR1000

I have a DR1000. Can anyone think of a reason not to get an iPad instead?

Are you using your DR1000 to watch movies and play video games? If so, iPad is probably a better choice.
Although iPad is an ok device to read on - it's by no stretch of imagination revolutionary. There are many UMPC and Tablet devices out there to choose from. For me personally there is no comparison in reading on an e-Ink and backlit screen device. Battery life is also something that you should consider.

If however, you like Apple gear, that's a different story.

How come you bought an e-ink device in the first place?

eInk is easy on the eyes, unlike iPad display.

I think the DR1000 serves a different purpose. If you think of the ipad as a large iTouch it has a lot going for it. However marking up, annotating and working on large pd files is not one of them. I think for general reading on a short time basis the ipad would do well and it has significant advantages in the web browsing and connectivity areas. It is not primarily designed, IMO for reading. The DR series do reading well and the DR with its annotation ability and pdf features work well for the office environment.
Physically they are both of a similar size.

If you want a device that is really good at reading eBooks, then get a dedicated eBook reader (like the DR1000). If you want a multi-media tablet that is "OK" for casual reading of eBooks, then get a tablet (like the iPad). They're really two different things that do different jobs.

I bought it for the e-ink display. It is much easier to read but the speed is so slow. It drives me crazy. I also bought it to keep notes in pdf. This works great as well but I am sure there will be an app for that.

Pixel Qi's display is where it's at and runs circles around both the ipad and anything irex could do anytime soon. Granted either company could look to use the Pixel Qi screen but it's unlikely. I'd suspect that Amazon will do it right by Q2 2010 and choose a display that will satisfy color and be easy on the eyes by turning the back light off. They are cheaper and easier to produce than e-ink from Vizplex.

I'd also look for tablets running Android which will be open and allow people to use them as they see fit, instead of Apple doing their own DRM driving.

Qualcomm's Mirasol is also a really cool technology if it becomes widely available.

This is a bit off topic, but I don't know why one cannot just get a tablet laptop (Like IBM's X61 or similar) which has a swivel display to turn into a tablet, or a normal, ultra portable laptop. Best of both worlds (and the best keyboard in town). As it stands now, the iPad is fairly limited, and not much more than a gadget with a very limited audience. I genuinely don't understand the point of it.

I guess there's some cosmic balance in bringing up the one device that has more hype behind it than the iPad. Bonus points for mentioning Pixel Qi AND the iPad in the same sentence.

It will have an Apple logo on it, what more do you need to know? Lots of people will buy it just based on that.

The power saving of Pixel Qi is the ability to maintain readability with the backlight turned off. The JetBook reader also has a LCD screen but no backlight and achieves 'over 20 hours' of active usage, as claimed on their website. Is this what you were expecting in terms of performance?

Well the Notion Ink Adam is going to be a tablet pc with the Pixel Qi screen, rumored for Spring 2010. That is what I'm waiting for. The first run of the device will be on Android but its expected to run Ubuntu (I'm not sure if they will be selling a separate device with Linux or if people will just hack it). That's the device to wait for not the iPad.

For my understand, iPad is not good for reading papers. The screen solution of ipad is 1024*768, 133ppi. If your pdf paper is two-column formatted, even in dr1000, the font is small and not very very clear. The ipad should be worse. Although i know you can zoom and move easily with ipad, but that is not enough. This is the same reason i dont want to buy plastic logic.
